Yah same here. Either way, I doubt Mota's health is a deal killer. I'm sure they had some other options in place already.
It's nice to root for Delcarmen because he's a hometown guy but I don't think he's anything special. I guess getting Riske is more important at this point, because as Misfit pointed out, he's tough on LH's.Comment

Re: Boston to trade Marte and Mota for Crisp
Lefty specialists (actual left-handed pitchers) will be available during and after spring training. Delcarmen struggles to keep his delivery consistent, and loses command when he slacks off. But he's got a great arm, and pitched last year without his greatest weapon, which is power curveball. My personal take is that he could mature into a dominating setup man. And let's not forget that Gammons once said that he could be the guy that went on a K-Rod like run in the bullpen for the Sox last year (close, it was Papelbon!).
EDIT: oversight...Manny will start the year in AAA. So how is it we have room for Mota and Riske on the major league roster with Timlin/Seanez/Tavarez/Arroyo/Foulke and company?? Sounds like a 4 player trade now to me, which decreases value on our part since Riske > Mota.Last edited by CWood2; 01-24-2006, 06:19 PM.Comment

Re: Boston to trade Marte and Mota for Crisp
Sweet. Now we have a wasted roster spot in Guillermo Mota. This guy has season ending Tommy John surgery written all over him. I'm thinking Scott Williamson/Matt Mantei part III. This also might mean our vaunted deep bullpen just lost a key cog. I don't see any way they move Manny Delcarmen now, because this essentially is a two-fer: We now know Mota is useless, and we'd be losing Delcarmen as well. There will be injuries this year, so who fills in the gap? I know there's Hansen, but who else?
Ugh.Comment

Re: Boston to trade Marte and Mota for Crisp
Keep in mind the fact that Cleveland says Mota failed his physical doesn't mean he is necissarily injured. Remember, we said Beckett had injury concerns which is what got us Mota in the first place.
Our bullpen is still pretty deep with Foulke, Timlin, Seanez, Tavarez, and some combination of Arroyo/Papelbon. Let's wait and see what happens..Comment

Schilling, Clement, Wells, Beckett, Wakefield
Arroyo, Papelbon, Mota, Tavarez, Foulke, Timlin, Seanez, Vermilyea(rule 5), Dinardo (assuming we carry him as a LH reliever.Comment

Re: Boston to trade Marte and Mota for Crisp
I don't think Delcarmen will be anything special, either, but I would like to see him get more of a chance in Boston. He needs to get control of that breaking ball and maybe add one more pitch to arsenal before he's major-league ready. And as with any young pitcher, he needs to be more consistent with his fastball.
I can't see something like Mota flunking his physical killing this deal, but it could. I never consider deals done until the press conference is held and the pessimist in me is saying this won't happen but who knows?
As for people who could step in during the season, Lester and Hanson are the two prime candidates for the bullpen, along with a couple other "lesser" guys. Hanson will probably be there at the end of the year, as someone in this pen will falter and have a bad year (Seanez, Mota, Timlin, Foulke...) opening the door for Hanson, provided he pitches well at Pawtucket.Comment

Re: Boston to trade Marte and Mota for Crisp
Interesting. Mota's agent has said they did have some concerns about his shoulder but he did not fail the physical.
Adam Katz, agent for Guillermo Mota, denied a radio report out of Philadelphia Tuesday night that said Mota had failed his physical with the Indians. However, Katz acknowledged that the Indians raised issues with Mota's right shoulder, which could kill, or require revision to, the six-player deal that would bring Coco Crisp to Boston.
This is looking more and more like an attempt by Cleveland to milk a little bit more out of this deal. I doubt that with all the work put in by these teams, something like this kills it but you never know.Comment

Re: Boston to trade Marte and Mota for Crisp
The only thing i don't like about this deal is that with Chicago's obvious improvement, the Tribe will likely be competing for the wildcard from day one...as will the Sox. I don't like giving them a key peice in a year which we should be ready to challenge for a playoff spot.
Shapiro has done an impressive job overall...I trust his judgement. Crisp is a bit high-strung, and it'll be fun to watch how he fits into the Sox clubhouse.Hank's Custom Collectibles 3D printer/painter extraordinaireComment

Just posted on ESPN.com that he did indeed fail his physical. Trade isn't looking so good now.

I'll take Declarmen(SP).... or just drop Riske and give us Marte and Shoppack for Crisp and Bard. Either way its still a steal for the Tribe.http://flotn.blogspot.com

Re: Boston to trade Marte and Mota for Crisp
Sounds like Mota's failing could be in part because the Reds are interested in getting back into the mix. The Red Sox would send Clement to the Reds who would send Kearns to the Indians who would send Crisp to Boston. If the Red Sox could work something out where they weren't giving up Marte, I'd be very impressed. If not, they should just acquire Kearns now that O'Brien is out of the picture in Cincy.Comment
