    Chris Shelton

This guy is a beast. He showed flashes of being a great player last year, and he's off to an unbelievable start this year.

Nice reward to those who drafted him this year, but I wouldn't get too excited with him. As pointed out by Tim Dierkes at RotoWorld, he's faced piss poor pitching thus far. Namely, Scott Elarton, R.A. Dickey, and Jon Koronka. 3 of the 5 were hit at Ameriquest Field.
He's a good hitter at 1B, but he will likely slow down a bit when pitchers figure out the holes in his swing.

I can't believe we didn't protect this guy in the Rule V draft. He showed this in the minors, but Littlefield thought it would be better to protect some scrubs who are currently out of baseball.

I've seen parts of the last 3 Tigers games and this kid is flat our raking right now.

                  Re: Chris Shelton

To make matters worse, the year the Pirates let him go, the team had 3 open spots on the 40 man roster.

They gave up on him after 122 unproductive AB's at the AA level.

It was a foolish move considering at High A he posted a line of .359/.478/.641

There are reasons why the Pirates are awful every year............

It's only 6 games, let's see what his average is at the end of the month. I say he doesn't even hit .300 this year. Mark this post down if you want. In fact, he'll hit .288, 22 HR's, and 81 RBI's this year.

Every year some nobody starts off red hot only to simmer back down. I've done fantasy baseball long enough to see the owners or fans get all giddy over a guy's first week.

                      .280 - 22 HRs - 80 RBIs

                      Is that a bad line?

I think the Tigers would take that for a guy they paid $50,000 for.

However, he hit 18 bombs, drove in 59 and batted .300 (actually .299) in 107 games last year splitting time DY and Pena. I think your "fantasy baseball expert opinion" is a little low.

Nah, that's a great line. But it's an average to below average line for a first basemen. We have that same line on our team, his name is Ben Broussard. But I heard over the weekend on some talk show where they were predicting .345, 40 hr's, and 120 rbi's leading this team to a division championship. If he's still doing it in a month, call me, he seemed to start his comeback to earth yesterday with 4 AB's and 3 K's.

I don't see .345 as reality, but I do think (and I said this BEFORE the season) that Shelton would be the Tiger to talk about this year offensively (Justin Verlander would be the name to know on the hill).

I think, realistically, he has a shot to knock on .300 (+/- .005), hit 30 and drive in 90-100.

If he hits .300, 30HR's and 100 RBI's, I'll be the first to say I was wrong. I'm just saying, not even fantasy wise, just saying overall, a guy goes bonkers in the first week or 2 every season only to have an average season.

                            2004, Henry Blanco started the year 9 for 14, 4 walks, 3 HR's and 3 doubles. He ended up hitting .206 with 10 HR's.

Brian Roberts power last year, he hit 5 HR's in the first 2 weeks, hit like 10 the rest of the season.

Just saying, it happens every season.

Sure does. The difference, in my opinion, is that these numbers aren't a huge stretch based on what people have seen. Henry Blanco and Brian Roberts had very little in their body of work to justify their surge. Shelton at least had strong numbers last year in 107 games and a really nice College and Minor League showing.

Hey... anything can happen in baseball...and especially to the Tigers... but I think the kid is for real.

The Tigers 5-1 start is nothing to get hysterical over, but there is no doubt that this team is going to score runs this year...in bunches.
