    Trevor Hoffman

I'm not sure if any of those sports networks have mentioned anything about this (I no longer watch baseball tonight, sportscenter, or any of those nowadays), but Hoffman is closing in on Lee Smith's record. He just notched his 34th save (an easy one which I'd agree really overrates the stat) to give him his 470th career save. There are still quite a handful of games left, but I think he'll reach it this season if not tie it.

He has put together another solid but quiet year, after only getting 3 save opportunities in April, he's really picked it up to lead the NL in that category. He did struggle a little last July but all-in-all, he's putting up one of his best seasons since 1998.

He may not be posting eye-popping strikeout numbers or throwing a heater over 87 MPH, but he's still getting it done.

I really wonder if he has enough to make it to 500. That would be so cool.

I hope he racks up a bunch this year for fantasy purposes.

      Re: Trevor Hoffman

Hoffy got another save today, pitched one full inning striking out the side against the D-backs to earn his 34th save this season.

He also had an article on ESPN, but it's an insider article.

A first ballot HOF, do you think he'll go down as the best closer ever? I know Rivera gets more hype, but Hoffman's been pretty flawless over his career.

Sadly, I don't think Hoffman makes it in on first ballot. It'll take him a few years IMO. Rivera is a slam dunk tho. I'd like to see Lee Smith and Goose Gossage get in before Hoffman.

Probably one of the best. Unless something happens to Rivera that curtails him short of passing Franco and Smith (and perhaps even passing Hoffman after Hoffman passes it), Rivera will still be seen as one of the best closers. It'll be one of those things you can discuss and debate, but really have no clear answer.

Rivera gets all the hype. Hoffman is a superior closer at least when you compare the regular season stats. He most likely will not make first ballot in the Hall of Fame, but he should get in.

Hoffman would probably have over 500 saves if he hadn't missed basically all of the 2003 season.

                    Career ERA+

                    Rivera- 197
                    Hoffman- 146

Seeing as how saves are the most arbitrary pitching statistic along with wins, and the job of a closer is to prevent runs from scoring... this seems like the best barometer to measure the two.

Well of course it is, you're a Yankee fan.

So, a stat which shows that Rivera is a much more dominant pitcher than Hoffman is ruled null because the person who posted it is a Yankee fan? Sure, that is absolutely logical and makes perfect sense.

Forget the rest of the stats and focus on just one.

Ok so show me another stat other than one that isnt completely team dependent (such as saves) that proves me wrong.

                              ERA? Rivera.
                              WHIP? Rivera
K/BB ratio is the only area where Hoffman has him beat and that is barely
