Re: Trevor Hoffman
Hmm.
Hoffman has 479.
Rivera has 413.
So that's a difference of 66 saves.
Rivera has been pretty consistent over the years, so I think if he stays healthy over the next 2 seasons, pick up about 33-35 saves each season, he should probably take the record.
And yes, congrats to Hoffman for the record.Comment

Re: Trevor Hoffman
Thats assuming Hoffman retires after this season. Even with a down year next season Hoffman should still get to 500 Saves and even if he only saves 30-35 games next year unless Rivera has a 50+ saves season there would still be considerable distance between the two.Hmm.

Rivera has been great but i'm not sure he has more than a couple of years left in him. The strain of pitching in what seems like over 80 games (including postseason) per season for the last decade may be catching up to him and at 36 Rivera is no spring chicken.Comment

Re: Trevor Hoffman
Hoffy will definitely come back next year. We'll find out if it's his last season next year.
As for Rivera, at worst he should end up in second unless again injuries force him to stop. He may be two years younger than Hoffman, but both pitchers are up there in age (Rivera will be 37 next year, Hoffman 39)
I expect Hoffman and Rivera to round out the top two spots in the saves leaderboard. Both pitchers have been that good and deserving and should bring respect to a position where many simply cannot pitch as well and as consistent as these two.Comment

Re: Trevor Hoffman
I'm keeping the tracker in my sig for both Mariano Rivera and Trevor Hoffman. It's unfair for me if I removed it since Hoffman passed it so it'll be up there until both pitchers get 500 or Hoffman calls it a career after this season and Rivera passes him.
*Speaking of Hoffy's 480th save, ESPN reported last night's game as Hoffman's 480th save when it was Linebrink who got the save instead.Comment

Re: Trevor Hoffman
With the way closers tend to fade quickly, it's amazing he's been this good and this consistent over such along period of time.

Re: Trevor Hoffman
The sad fact of the matter is that Hoffman would be regarded as the greatest closer of our generation and probably of all time if he played most of his career on the east coast. He'd definitely get the same kind of recognition and perhaps more so then Mariano Rivera gets from fans these days.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Trevor Hoffman
A lot of people think the same thing about Tony Gwynn. Look, even this year, with him and Cal going in to the HOF, the majority of the pub has been aimed at Cal Ripken. The sad fact of the matter is that Hoffman would be regarded as the greatest closer of our generation and probably of all time if he played most of his career on the east coast. That being said, imo, Rivera is the greatest closer ever, and deserves every bit of publicity he gets.Comment
