    Re: Trevor Hoffman

Number 474 came today in a must-win game against the Reds. If he gets a couple of saves against the Dodgers he could very well tie and/or break the record on the team's last homestand of the year.

Eh, I think the bottom line is that the Yankees wouldn't have won their last three WS titles if it wasn't for Rivera.

As for Hoffman, in arguably the biggest moment of his post season career he gave up a three-run homer to Scott Brosius.

No doubt Hoffman is a great closer, but you gotta come through when your team needs you the most - on the biggest stage too.

      Postseason ERA
      Rivera - 0.81
      Hoffman - 3.75

Again, I'd like to reiterate that this thread is not a Hoffman vs. Rivera thread. Is it fair to knock Hoffman and his postseason short comings when he was surrounded by 4A players and Scrubs for all but 3-4 seasons with the Padres? Sure you have to come through, but Rivera has more postseason appearances than the whole Padres franchise.

Bottomline, you can argue about whose greater, but these are two of the best closers ever. Their consistency, longetivity, and career have been simply amazing, postseason or not. Closers who can still dominate for so long are hard to comeby.

I apologize for bringing up the Rivera argument again, but Hoffman's post season ERA has nothing to do with who he's surrounded by, and you're obviously not surrounded by scrubs and 4A guys if you're in the post season.

True, but how many times has Hoffman appeared in the postseason compared to Rivera? One bad game can skew that ERA if it's only a handful of appearances.

No discredit to Rivera, because IMO no one will be as dominant as he has been in the postseason. I think Hoffy would have slightly improved numbers if he had more postseason appearances, but I wouldn't expect him to even come close to Rivera.

But they probably would have won another one if it wasn't for Rivera, of course that being in 2001 against Arizona. He's still one of the best closers ever, but still.

Hahah, are you serious? They probably wouldn't have made it past Oakland in the DS in '01 without Mo. Five shoutout innings, just four hits. And this was the year they came back from a 2-0 hole after losing their first two games in New York.

For the entire post season he gave up two earned runs in 16 IP. Without a throwing error and a bloop single the Yanks win that WS. I'm not making excuses, but there's no way in hell you can say the Yankees lost that WS because of Rivera.

It does not hurt to have a team as powerful as the Yankees backing you up either, superstars at most every position. Some of the most talented players in the history of baseball, Trevor has been surrounded by average to less than average players his whole career.

Superstars at every position? Maybe for the last two years but that's it. You could argue that Jeter, Clemens and Mo were the only "superstars" on the team during '96-'01.

Talent-wise Rivera's teams have been better than Hoffman's teams in their career. Even though they weren't all superstars, they were at least pretty damn solid at their position except for a few.

Speaking of Rivera, is he injured or something? I keep checking to make sure I'm not skipping him over when I go to update the saves tracker, but his name isn't showing up.

Yeah he's hurt, I think he may be back this week.

After a tough blown save yesterday (in a mismanaged game on the bullpen by Boch, used up all his key pitchers, leaving him with no one that has been at least solid this season to pitch in the extra inning), Hoffman rebounds and gets save number 476.

Not only that that but he also saved his 40 game of the year and broke his own MLB record with his 8th 40 save season.

Hoffman now pulls to within 1 of Lee Smith's record with his save tonight.
