Am I the only one who's thinking that Boston bid that high just to stop the Yankees from getting him?

Yes. If they bid just to keep him from the Yankees they would come out of this looking very badly and probably face some punishment if they didn't negotiate in good faith. I guarantee they went into this with the intention of signing him. It's in everyones best interest if he signs, regardless of the extra money the Red Sox are paying.

Im tellin you they dont need to sign JD Drew, Just find a 1 year maybe 2 year replacement b/c my Good buddy is in there Minor Leagues now and I'm tellin ya, There's a chance he's gonna make it big time.

Allright I actually say Sign JD Drew to 3 years if you can get him, If he stays healthy the lineup would be awesome. They could also just put Willy Mo in Right, Cocco in Center and Manny in left.

I knew I should have explained a little more.

I don't mean they went into it not wanting to sign him. I'm just saying that they might offer his quite as much money as they would otherwise. Try to get him to sign a much cheaper contract then what Boras wants.

Dan Patrick was talking about this, and he also speculated on if the Sox just did this to stop him from playing for a year...

Could be possible, its not like 50 million is going to hurt them.... They have an endless supply of money, and if they can stop the Yankees from getting him why not do it?

Only penalty they could possibly face would to be blackballed by all Japanese teams refusing to take a bid from the Sox... Other than that, I doubt they can face any penalty... They paid the 50 mill. they can do whatever they want with D-Mat.

I don't think so. Selig would come done hard on the Red Sox franchise if they attempted a stupid maneuver such as the one you mentioned. They would also have gotten all of their $51.1 million back, but it doesn't work like that.

The reason this doesnt make sense is because Matsuzaka is NOT a free agent after the 2007 season so would have to be posted again next year. It's in everyone's best interest to get a deal done here.

Exactly. If the Red Sox don't negotiate in good faith, I wouldn't be surprised if Selig went as far as awarding him to the next highest bidder. The whole point of the WBC was to make MLB and international sport. Selig is going to do everything in his power to get foreign stars here

The sad thing is Boston is going to be essentially paying 90 million dollars for an unknown quanitity as i've heard Boras is looking for a 40 million dollar contract.

I don't think any team in their right mind would pay $17 mil. per...and it would make sense to post a similar figure to the one they gave away just to contract him.

If you can find a well known source that says that the contract must be as high as the bid then I'll beleive it. But I don't because it sounds stupid and haven't heard it on any shows or articles I have read in the past week.

I have read that on multiple baseball forums, but I think that is a myth, as nobody has been able to come up with any source that supports that.

Won't matter because the RedSox will be making millions of this guy anyway, just like the Yanks with Matsui. Especially if he does coem to the MLB and does well.

Please don't compare Matsui with the Yankees. That's like comparing apples and oranges, even though Matsuzaka is Japanese. I can't even say the situation is similar as when Mariners acquired Ichiro, cause it's not.

Umm aren't the Yanks getting millions from Japanese companies? Exactly, that's what I compared it to.
