I'll agree that Piazza is the best offensive catcher ever to play but when I rank the best overall catchers Bench is a stud. Defensively and offensively. He has a few rings to prove it. He was an RBI machine that threw everyone out. MVP, world champ, etc. On a personal leve,l he is a jerk but so was Ty Cobb.

$10 million contract, a no-trade clause AND a promise not to offer him arbritration at the end of the year...Rod will only be looking for one-year leases when he's apartment hunting.

So if the Marlins are 20 games out and August comes around, they'll be the ones twiddling their thumbs because of the no-trade...They won't get anything in return at the end of the year - he's free and clear to go anywhere he wants if he can't be offered arbritration.

I'm so glad my Cubs didn't make that deal...

Piazza is a great offensive catcher and that is where it ends! He couldn't throw out Mo Vaughn trying to steal second. He is absolutely horrific defensively. Oh and by the way, how many rings does he have? None, but Bench has several! Pudge is a better all around catcher than Piazza! Piazza is about 5 or 6 on the all time list, behind Bench, Pudge, Berra, and several others. He is a great offensive catcher on a terribly underachieving overpaid team! To say he is the best ever hints that maybe you are drunk

who is talking about rings im not and by the way just because Johnny Bench has rings so that makes him that much better I dont think so teams win rings not one person. To put Piazza behide Pudge is really crazy Pudge is not even close to being a graet hitter as Piazza is..Bottom line Piazza is a catcher he sux on deffence we know that but he is still IMO the best catcher to play the game..So he didnt throw that guy out who cares would you look at that homerun WOW, thats what I say..

                    True....

As a fellow puerto rican, I wish Pudge the best, I'm so glad he didn't opt to sing with a japanise league.
At the same time, IMO he would have been better off in a AL team, where he can DH at least once a week to keep his legs fresh, his bat will scream in any league though.

B/C Pudge is better overall! Piazza is good offensively, but he is a LIABILITY on defense, which is why the Mets are terrible. A single against the Mets means a double b/c second is so easy to steal on Piazza. Just b/c a guy can hit with power doesn't make him a great baseball player, s**t Cecil Fielder hit HR's! You obviously know squat about baseball. Rings say it all, you don't got one, you don't got s**t, it is that simple. I guarantee you ask a HOFer with 500HR's and no rings if he would trade those HR's for a ring and his answer would be YES! Besides Piazza got punked by Clemens and didn't do s**t, that right there warrants some question to his abilities. Johnny Bench was a QB on the field, a monster at bat, and damn near impossible to steal on, unlike Piazza, lucky to throw out 15% of base stealers each year. And JB would have pimpsmacked Clemens, or at least tried. Nobody said Johnny was gay either

To put the words "Piazza" and "catcher" in the same sentence is a joke. Please. Great hitter, but pathetic at the most important part of his job. A walk is a double against the Mets because of this bag of nothing behind the plate.

Pudge hit for a signficantly higher average than Bench, was a threat as a base-stealer, and logged more doubles and triples than Bench, and I believe he impacts a game with his arm more than Bench. BUT, I would not deny Bench's greatness, nor his legitimate claim as the best of all time.

Bench and Pudge are No. 1 and No. 1a in my book. Piazza's a good designated hitter in a league that doesn't allow designated hitters.
