Yes you do have to spend to make money. But the Expos, Twins, Devil Rays, Royals, etc. could win 5 world series, there still not gonna get a whole lot of interest. Look at the A's, there good, but they can't sell out games. They aren't making much money.

    <hr /></blockquote><font class="post">

oh well I agree. you obviously need a strong market behind you. The Yankees are favored by playin in New York, that's an obvious.

But my point is that 15 years ago, the Yanks were pathetic. They had little fans and their only real star was Don Mattingly. They had nothing. No one wanted to play there. But they started signing a couple of leaders. Got lucky by drafting a number of players that would become strong role players on a team, etc.

A lot of the Yanks success is based on luck. But it is supported by intelligence. Yes, they have more money to play with, but other teams still do not spend the cash they CAN spend. I'd bet Milwaukee won't spend a dime in revenue sharing this season. they havent the past couple of years.

    Who's fault is that?
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer

Your right, I didnt realize he had all those AB as leadoff, seeing that im a Mets fan, and hate the Yankees, I dont watch them, ever, unless its highlights on ESPN.

Anyway, from what little of Soriano i do see, he SHOULD be a number 2 or 3 hitter. I think 3 would be best for him, where his poor OBP wouldnt really matter.

As far as his strikeouts are concerned, they do matter. A strikeout doesnt advance runners. Strikeouts dont put runners in play. Can u be productive with 157 SO, sure. Can u be preoductive with 188 (J. Hernandez, P. Wilson) sure. but that means that you have more AB's, lower AVG, and Few walks. If you look at Soriano's Splits, after the 0-1 count, he had 105 SO's to 91 H in 354ABs. And if you look at the rest of his splits, his highest AVG was on the first pitch. Lowest on 1-2, and pretty decent on 3-2, 1-1, 2-0 and 2-1, all hitters counts. To take a quote from Lenny Dystra, "He's a Hacker"

Ichiro's splits are better, in the sense that he had few ABs in bad counts, and struck out much less in the same counts.

But as i was thinking about this over the weekend, i thought "Ichiro is a prototypical leadoff guy, as evident by his .385 career OBP (which isnt all that great compared to past generations and even most non-leadoff guys over the past 10 yrs.

But to compare Ichiro to Soriano isnt really fare for either player, because they are both good at what they do, for their respective clubs. Now if you compare Bret Boone to Soriano or even Tejada to Soriano, then you can make arguements that on more reasonable.

Soriano getting any MVP votes last year was stupid.

Once again, Vipor with a solid, well thought out statement. The guy had an MVP type year you moron. 39 HR's, 41 SB's, .300 AVG, 128 runs scored is an MVP type year. I don't care how many K's he had. Get a clue.

No kidding dooch. Not to mention he led Major League baseball in extra base hits, hits and was 2nd in total bases. And to get 102 RBI's while batting leadoff ain't too bad either.

Yes, Viper you could use a clue.

That is just some pure crap, Ichiro really didn't have the stellar year he had in 2001. In fact, wasn't he struggling in some periods during the season?
