    Re: GODZILLA!!

Here is what The Sporting News says about him, I would think they have more of a clue then all of us here...

    Jan. 19, 2003 - 3:32 p.m.
Called “Godzilla” in Japan, Matsui has been tabbed Japan’s answer to Jason Giambi by more than one American scout. Matsui is an outfielder, and a decent one at that, but otherwise he has Giambi’s prime traits: patience, a solid lefty swing and the ability to hit for power and average. Matsui probably won’t top 35 homers in the U.S., but there is no reason he can’t be very comparable with Paul O’Neill.
Fantasy Spin: Matsui has the skills and polish to be a big-league All-Star

I could see that i dont think he would hit for as high an avg as O'Neill or for that matter as good as outfielder as O'Neill but that is a good comparision At least i hope he is close to O'Neil's numbers as a Yankee

I don't get how any of us here can really have an opinion on him? Have any of you ever seen him play?

Actually Prior is the best young pitcher in baseball. Perennial Cy Young winner. Pineiro, Oswalt, Penny, Wood, Burnett, Zito, Hudson, Lackey, and Halladay are the best young pitchers.

prior pitched what? a half year? in majors.

oswalt has pitched 2 years, pineiro almost 2 years, halladay had 1 breakout year that was 02,lackey half of season, zito cy young winner(3 years in majors), penny isn't that good, wood is good and so is hudson. Prior isn't in this group of young pitchers yet.

Matsui is going to struggle, mightily I might add.

Japanses baseball is a heavy does of breaking pitches and off speed pitches, and many American players who have played over there comment how "I didn't see a fastball the whole time."

While that is certainly an embelishment, the fact remains that this man has never really dealth with a major league caliber fastball that he will see many of. If his swing is long, as some scouts suggest, he will get pounded with heaters until he can show he can keep up.

Ichiro survived because quick wrists, ability to make contact, and tremendous speed. His rookie season he had what, 35 infield hits?

Being a slap hitter and coming to the sates is one thing, the game is based off making contact and running like hell.

But a power guy, for the money they gave him? Ouch.
