    Heres my list....

May go over the 25yr old limit, but I will pick player I think are under 25....

    1. Zito(already has a cy-young and went to USC)
    2. Oswalt
    3. Prior(will be numer 1...the guy has sick stuff and he went to USC as well.)
    4. Mulder
    5. Perez (guy threw two 1 hitters last year and had a perfect game into the 7th.)
    6. Hudson
    7. Padilla
    8. Lackey (the kid already pitched in the most dramatic game of his life....and most people don't remember in game 4 of the ALCS he pitched an awesome game where he went like 7 innings with 1 run...the kid has guts, after this year he may be a top 5 guy.)
    9. Pinero
    10. Burnett(nast stuff)

Most people would have Beckett, but I think he is all hype...hasn't impressed me that much granted I havent seen him play much, but Ive seen him about 4 times and I wasn't impressed.

SportsorDeath- some decent points. To say that Pineiro's stuff is ordinary is totally wrong. His curve is pretty much as good as any right handed pitcher in the league today. He can locate the fastball, and he has a very polished change up. You are right Oswalt has better stuff, he is a very rare talent. Its not fair to compare anyone to Oswalt other then a guy like Pedro, those guys are just plain freaks. Yes, minute maid park seems like a disadvantage but for him it doesn't see m to affect him. He actually pitches much better at home then he does on the road. 2.80 Era to 3.30. Safeco though does help Pinerio out considerably. Safeco can kill hitters at times and Pinerio is the type that can take advantage of that fact. I think they shoud be on the same list, just not compared. Freddy has the potential to be better then Oswalt if he can keep his head on straight. Garcia should have a CY young along with Zito.

                Re: GODZILLA!!

Not many like Matsui's chances I see...perhaps because he is a Yankee? Nobody thought Ichiro would hit over .270 either, especially Rob Dibble, and he got to wear a thong through Times Square because of it. True, Matsui will have to adjust, but why can't he do well? I think he will do OK, but the real international signing story will be Contreras. I think he'll be great.

And the best young pitchers, if I was making a staff:
                1. Mark Prior-Will be the game's best soon. He's amazing.
                2. Barry Zito-Wicked curve, one of my favorite players.
                3. Roy Oswalt-Pedro-like in size, and in dominance. Succeeds greatly in pinball machine of a ballpark.
                4. Tim Hudson-He's like the black hole of wins, just sucks them in like a vortex.
                5. Josh Beckett-Will be up with Prior if he can get rid of those blisters.
Also see: Piniero (most underrated), Weaver (2nd most underrated), Brett Myers, Roy Halladay, Mark Mulder, Kerry Wood, Vicente Padilla, Mark Buerhle, Freddy Garcia, and Wade Miller.

And in 3-4 years, the big talk of the town will be young Mets prospect Scott Kazmir. He's a lefty, and he had a 0.50 ERA with a 2 K/inning average at rookie ball last year. He's been compared to Koufax, and will be a great pitcher, I think.

weaver isn't underrated I think he is overrated. He can't handle pressure.

Some young pitchers to watch for are in next 2-3 years are Soriano(if he can get a 3rd pitch), Anderson(if he can get injuries behind him), Nagoette(K machine but just needs to work on control), and a bunch others.

I think Matsui, at best, will be a .260, 15-20 HR, 60-70 RBI man.

Not bad, but certainly not worth the money he received.

And the Cuban pitcher, Contreras? Well, for a "30" year old rookie who has NEVER pitched in the majors, he has a lot of hype. Given the history of Cubans lying about their age, I'd imagine that if he claims he is 30/31, he is more likely 33/34.

And he received 8 million for 4 years? That's a lot of dough.

I think these tow as Yankees are catching a lot of flak because how Steinbrenner just out pid anybody. Is the potentially 33 year old, never played pros Contreras really worht more money than All Star Johnny Damon?

Is the potentially average Matsui worth all that money?

The answer on both counts is "not yet." It must be nice to able to take such expensive "risks," which other teams cannot do.

Also, I do agree that Jeff Weaver has electric stuff, his movement is wicked, I just don't think he knows how to use it. The way I see it, pitchers are successful when they have good stuff-and when they know how to use it. Having one or the other won't make you good.

Agreed. Good points. I overexaggerated a little when I said Pineiro's stuff is ordinary. Like you and I both stated, it is not on the level of Oswalt, but Joel does have some above average pitches, which I am pretty sure I did say in my first post about him. I have been really impressed with Pineiro actually. Every time I see him, there isn't any one thing he does that jumps out at me and makes me go "wow this guy is a stud", but he just gets it done. Put simply, the kid pitches like a 30 year old veteran. I agree with you that Garcia has better stuff, but he doesn't appear to be quite as strong mentally as Pineiro is, even at this stage of his career. I saw him get rattled a lot last year. Maybe it was because he wore down, though, who knows? He was absolutely brilliant in 2001, and even though I am an A's fan I felt, like you, that he deserved the Cy Young. He was nails for my fantasy team that year.

I have seen a couple people mention John Lackey of Anaheim as one of the top 10 under 25, but I wouldn't put him quite that high. He is pretty similar to Pineiro to me, although Joel has better stuff than Lackey. They are both extremely gutsy and poised though, and that is a big part of what being a great pitcher is about. At the end of this season, I would expect at least one of the two will jump ahead of some of the pitchers most people here have mentioned.
