Brendan, the AL is full of offspeed pitchers. Look at Pedro. Sure his 92 mph fastball is ok, but it's the changeup and curveball that makes him great. Look at Zito, Sparks, Wakefield. I'd be more worried about Matsui if he was in the NL facing Schilling, Johnson, Brown, Wood, etc.

In both leagues, the heater sets up everything else, meaning he'll be down 0-1, 0-2, 1-2 before he sees anything he could hit, at all.

And Pedros fastball is a little better than "okay." Thing is, Matsui hasn't even played in a league where he saw Frank Castillo quality fastballs on a regular basis.

An average MLB pitcher has a better fastball than what he is used to seeing. The good pitchers, they'll win their battles. But it's the mediocre guys who are going to pound him until he can catch up.

                Re: GODZILLA!!

A lot of really good posts in this thread, guys. BrendanFoley, whatever your name is, your last 2 posts were really good. I agree with you whole heartedly that Matsui is going to struggle big time with even an average major league fastball (89-92 mph).

Joel Pineiro looks pretty promising, but he really shouldn't even be in the same sentence as Roy Oswalt. His stuff is electric and he is only getting better. He could win a Cy Young within the next couple years, but it will be tough with all the great young arms the NL has, not to mention, Unit and Schilling both have gas left in the tank. Pineiro's biggest asset right now is his poise. He doesn't have one great pitch, but they are all above average.

I think Jeff Weaver has much better stuff than Pineiro does, he just can't put it all together and at times is a train wreck on the mound. If her ever learns how to actually pitch, he is a 20 game winner just waiting to happen.

There are a lot of really good young pitchers right now, some of which are about to explode. Oswalt, Prior, Josh Beckett, Brad Penny, even AJ Burnett could be really good. Some others I haven't seen mentioned yet : Brett Myers (Phillies), Jake Peavy and Dennis Tankersley (Padres), Jerome Williams (Giants). There are more, but I am drawing a blank right now.

Here is what mine would look like

                        1) Barry Zito
                        2) Roy Oswalt
                        3) Mark Prior
                        4) Mark Mulder
                        5) Mark Buerhle
                        6) Kerry Wood
                        7) Roy Halladay
                        8) Josh Beckett
                        9) Joel Pineiro
                        10) Jason Jennings

Mark Prior shouldn't be that high based on current achievement, but he is going to be really special, so I ranked him high.

First off I wouldn't say 147k's in 116 innings is doing nothing.....

                            1. Barry Zito
                            2. Roy Oswalt
                            3. Mark Mulder
                            4. Mark Prior- probably number 1 on this list after this year
                            5. Roy Halladay
                            6. Joel Pineiro
                            7. Odalis Perez
                            8. Josh Beckett-also could be number 1 on this list if he can get rid of the blisters that come from that nasty curveball.
                            8. Vicente Padillia
                            9. Kerry Wood
                            10. Mark Buerhle
                            11. C.C. Sabathia, Kip Wells, Tony Armas Jr, Brett Myers, Gil Meche, etc theres a bunch of them out there.
