Re: Predictions for 2003
The Cards have no pitching? Well they don't have any all-stars with the exception of Morris, but they won 97 games and beat Houston by 13 last year. Jeff Kent is not going to win 13 games. And he is their only improvement over last year (unless you count Brian Moehler). We still have to see how well Woody Williams pitches, but if he is healthy, he is a sure 14-15 game winner. I'm not expecting much from Tomko. As of right now, the Cards' pitching staff is in better shape than it was at any point after June 22 last year. If any of you remember, they were winning games with Luther Hackman starting. I won't underestimate the Cubs, but they won't win the Central. Astros will be fighting for the wild card along with Chicago and Philadelphia, along with whichever West coast team is not in first place.Comment

Re: Predictions for 2003
They won 97 games with Chuck Finley and Benes. Without those two they have Morris, Simonttachi, Tomko, and Hamilton. Yea all four of those pitchers could be in the 4 era.
The Astros are ok. If Carlos Hernandez hadn't gone down I would have picked them to win the central.
However, the Cubs have 3 solid starters. They have arguably the deepest bullpen in the central. Their lineup isn't the best but better than last year. Plus they have the best manager in the game in my opinion. Besides, Sosa is actually going to be on time for spring training! He hasn't done that since '98. It seems like this could be the Cubs' year... to maybe make the playoffsComment

As a Padres fan, let me just tell you, that Tomko will start off strong, and then his arm will die, and his ERA will skyrocket, but if he is anything like Reggie Sanders or Brett Boone, you guys may be lucky!Comment

Re: Predictions for 2003
Well, Benes and Finley pitched strong, but in the end only won 12 games combined. Hamilton will not start, he is in the pen. It is between Eldred, SImonttachi, Dustin Hermanson, Garrett Stephenson, and possibly Jimmy Journell for the 4 and 5 spot in the rotation. And look for Chris Carpenter somewhere in the rotation later in the year.
I totally agree that the Cubs are a force to be reckoned with, and their potential is really great with all their young pitching. All I know is the central, along with the whole NL, should be exciting to watch this year. I don't think there is one team that is a shoe-in to win their division.Comment
