Jose Reyes earns his walks by taking balls.

Bonds "earns" his walks because of his reputation of a power hitter and the fact that he can't do anything special on the basepaths.

Just say you don't like Bonds and that's the reason you think he's overrated. Otherwise your argument really doesn't make any sense.

Whether I like Barry Bonds or not doesn't have anything to do with my opinion that Barry Bonds is overrated.

Bonds doesn't have to gut out his walks like Reyes or other players do. All facets of Bonds game have been regressing since he broke the home run record, along with his durability. He was a great player when he was younger... but as he ages, he not only regresses, but becomes more and more overrated.

Dude. I hate Bonds, but this argument is ridonkulous. Nobody who leads an entire league in OPS can be considered overrated. Barry "earned" the free passes he gets by spending almost two decades as one of the most feared hitters in baseball. Your argument would be valid if they were just walking him because he's Bonds, but he ranks 3rd in the NL in SLG right now. Clearly, the walks are still justified....

Bonds broke the home run record in 2001. If you look up his stats from 2002-2004 it's pretty clear that there was NO regression in his game. He has definitely regressed the past couple of seasons but dismissing him as overrated, even though he still leads the NL in OPS, because he "doesn't have to earn his walks" doesn't make any sense to me. I'm sure the Giants don't mind the runs they're scoring on the walks that Bonds "didn't earn."

And, in addition to what everyone is saying, it's not like every time he's walked it's intentional. He has a great eye at the plate, and he has earned walks his entire career. He has only had an OBP under .400 once in the last 18 years

                Seriously.

Bonds hasn't earned his walks? He's one of the most feared and talented hitters of all time. By producing at such a high level for YEARS, he has earned those walks. I'm really wondering whether or not you actually watch baseball or not with your comments. Seriously, if you were pitching, would you want to pitch to that guy?

I hate Bonds as much as the next guy but to say he's overrated is nuts. The guy has earned his walks out of respect for his abilities, and how intimidating he is. As for the topic of the thread I have to go with Juan Piere. The guy has no power, strikes out to much, and a pie arm. A one tool player should not make the money he makes.

I'm alright with everything else you said, but strikes out too much? He had 38 strikeouts in 699 at bats last year.

I had the wrong impression about him then, my bad. He is still the most overrated in my book.

You're looking at the stats. People do the same with Pat Burrell.

Bobby Abreu is overrated. He's un-clutch. He's lazy in the field. His power has disappeared since the steroids scandal surfaced.

He gets on base a lot though. And he seemed plenty clutch to me last year when de destroyed the Red Sox in that 5 game series at Boston.

I'll agree he is not a good outfielder, but offensively through last year I don't think he was overrated at all, even with the declining power.

That is also not true. 2004 was probably his best year (.362 BA, .812 SLG, .609 OBP, 232 BB, and an OPS of 1.422), at the tender age of 40.

normally teams dont give 35 million to a player that they think is underrated. hes not even in the majors, to me if that doesnt scream overrated then nothing does. the rest of the players mentioned in this thread are in the majors. correct? * besides rob deer*

He killed the Braves in the postseason when he was with Houston and got a huge deal based on that. He's underachieved ever since then. He's a good CF, but a little overhyped.
