I wouldn't build the Marlins diddly unless there was a guarantee that they would field more than a glorified AA team & that they'd invest money into their homegrown products.

Under this current CBA, there are only 10-12 legit major league teams. Most of the league is nothing but AAA w/perks. If you're in the Royals, Marlins, Rays, Pirates etc organizations, you really are playing for a contract w/the Sox's, Yanks & LA teams.

There obviously has to be something in place to force teams to at least put on a facade of fielding a competitive team. They'll have like a 10 million dollar payroll next year.

I guess the marlins just want to have 400 fans a game until MLB notices and forces a city to build them a new taxpayer funded stadium.
What are you complaining about? Two to three years from now, the Marlins will win yet another World Series, dump everyone for more prospects to build up for another WS in about 5-7 years.

Meanwhile the Phillies won't win **** during the same time period except for MVPs that they don't deserve unless your name is Albert Pujols.

You should be happy. Cabrera isn't in your division anymore!

Cabrera was never a problem for the Phillies.

It's the Phillies that are a problem for the Phillies.

Chicago's Guillen breaks the news to Cabrera

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- When Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen called his wife Tuesday evening to tell her that the Tigers had just traded for Miguel Cabrera, Ibis Guillen had a surprising response.

``That's funny,'' she said to Ozzie. ``He's sitting in the car right next to me.''

The Guillens and Cabreras are good friends, and Ibis Guillen was driving Miguel Cabrera to the airport in Miami. Cabrera was on his way home to Venezuela.
                That must've been awkward.

I agree that there should be a floor. If you aren't willing to spend at least $40-$50 million on player salaries let alone $20 million, you shouldn't exist in MLB. That said, no way the players get a floor without a cap and I think they like the way the Yankees spend money.

I don't see why they'd insist on a cap @ the high end. The luxury tax is putting money in the cheap teams' pockets.

Damn! Tigers have a monster line-up. I wonder if they keep Inge as a utilty man? He's played behind the dish before and can play the corners and outfield.

This is so true. Marlin fans get a championship every 5 or 6 years. Phillies fans..........not so much. Hang in there brother.

Either way I agree that there should be a floor. I don't think anyone should get luxury tax help if they aren't spending any money. Iirc, the Expos payroll in their last year was less than what Steinbrenner was paying in tax and what the Expos were getting. George was complaining that we was paying the Expos salaries.

I've never really liked the way luxury tax is paid out. It rewards the crappy teams too much with no incentive to try to get better. Tampa Bay was happy being awful with a sub $30 million payroll because they were actually making money. I'm not sure what the fix is other than contraction or moving the teams. Miami is a lousy sports town.

I agree Miami is a bad sports city. But I also think its unfair to blame the city when the team twice has sold a WS team away for nothing.

The only way to fix the problem is to make winning profitable, or profits based on winning. Maybe instead of the entire league sharing in the profits from the playoffs, they can make it go exclusively to the playoff participants.

Wow. Stark just said the Marlins take in 60 mil before selling a ticket. & their player payroll is expected to be under 10 mil.
