    AJ Burnett

Can somebody explain why anyone would give this guy 16 million per year for 5 years??? Especially a smaller market team like Atlanta?

The guy strikes people out, big deal. He had 220+ strikeouts last year, but that went along with 86 walks! Let's not forget how injury prone he is.

Can someone enlighten me? It's not like he's a household name who will bring fans to the stadium. I think 3 years for 15 million is ok, but 5 seems like another Darren Dreifort or Kevin Brown fiasco.

    Why oh why.

He has some of the best pure stuff in the league and has proven capable of pitching in one of the toughest divisions in baseball. GM's (especially the bad ones) are willing to take big risks on guys like that at times.

I definitely agree it's way more than he should get and hope the Yankees interest is just a ploy to get Sabathia and Sheets to sign. Do want Sheets.

because guys like Vincente Padilla and Carlos Silva go for $ 11 million plus per year, why not spend 5 million extra on someone with upside. Not to mention when he is on he unhittable. By the way the Braves $102 million dollar payroll i'm pretty sure makes them not a small market team.

Good point on the Padilla and Silva deals...although Padilla is a pretty good pitcher.

Throw in Adam freaking Eaton too...overpaid bum.

They will spend the money because they can afford it and starting pitching on the FA market is extremely overpriced.

When AJ is on, he stuff is electric (boogie woogie woogie) but does have the injury bug bite him a lot.

It's the old "this guy's got electric stuff. I bet my coaches can get the most out of him" deal that follows Burnett. More often then not he gets injured or under performs.

                        Re: AJ Burnett

It just seems more logical to spend all your money on positions that are rarely injured (DH, 1b, RF, LF, maybe 3B). Then you get cheap defensive specialists at the other positions; grab some young, fresh arms for the rotation, and then round out the bullpen with proven relievers.

It seems like way too many teams put their money into pitching, which is not the reliable part of baseball. Teams are top heavy and collapse because of these efforts. I think it would be wiser to spend your money on the base - the reliable portion of your team and then be more fickle with the other positions.

Well, pitching wins championships, but I agree with your comment on spending.

I think it's more a result of the market.

My plan would always be to spend on hitting and grow pitching.

Burnett is the only free agent out there who will command top dollar and is a sure-fire, 100% guaranteed, bust. Its funny we as fans can see that but a GM wanting to make a splash in free agency getting turned on by 98mph radar gun readings just can't resist.
