But I wouldnt expect Yankees fans to think outside the box on that one, I am saying this as a baseball fan, nothing to do with the damn Red Sox or anything.

If it was the Red Sox who did this, I would say the same crap.

Give me a break. Athletes have always been overpaid, ticket prices have always been tough for the average person, there's always been people living in poverty and/or unemployed.

    Nothing's changed.

Man, they are setting themselves up to be potentially one of the most disappointing and overpaid team ever.

The payroll is probably going to be lower than last years, so it won't be more disappointing than last year, or most of the teams since 2004.

            What?

They have not always been overpaid. Just ask the guys who plaid all the way up to the mid 80's. In fact in baseball, it was Steinbrenner who set that trend.

And even so, when the overpaid started, the economy was booming and stable ... it is in a much worse position than it has ever been, or there would not have been a 700 billion dollar bail out, and the auto industry wouldn't be crying for one either.

On ticket prices, that is BS too. It was so much easier 10 years ago to get cheap tickets and get them often.

I dont get how you can say "always has been" unless you are in an age bracket to not experience when things were accessible.

It wasn't until the last 10-15 years things got out of control.

The Yankees have a Stadium to pay for & the only way it will get paid is if the Yankees keep people in the seats. As djep said before:

They've got the most powerful brand in all of sports and they invest in the product. In turn they set attendance records, sell tons of ads on their cable network and their merchandise flies off the shelves...then they re-invest that into the team.

It'll be very beautiful signing when Burnett is hurt.

Look at his track record, he's nothing more than a contract year pitcher, now he has a 5 year deal? Oh boy...

On the other side, if Burnett actually decides to A)play a full year and B) get his head screwed on straight, he'll be worth every penny. But those are both longshots.

Exactly, I don't wanna flame anyone but I'm just sick of so many people saying the same thing. Do you really think that money just grows on trees in Steinbrenners office. We earn that money. But hey everyone keep on jumping on the bandwagon and hate the Yankees. all I got to say is 26 and counting

Your right, not always, I shouldn't have said that.

However, the point still stands, that salaries have been out of control for 10-15 years, and people have complained about them. No one's going to start crying about Sabathia getting a ton of money who hasn't been crying for years.

                        Re: AJ Burnett

Burnett being injury prone is the least of my worries. We are getting a guy who is proven, can be dominant and unhittable at times, Checking his track record he has actually been pretty consistent his era hovers around the high 3's and last year 4.07 pretty respectable, lead the AL in strikeouts last year. and a career 3.81 era and a winning record. He's a great number 3 or 4 pitcher. I never said he's gonna be the face of our franchise. But with a rotation consisting of Sabathia, Wang, Joba and Burnett. it looks like a very promising rotation for 09 a hell of alot better then 08.

Yanks just jumped to the top of the heap IMO.(in the AL East)
Two QUALITY pitchers and one(Burnett) just gave the Yanks at least a +10 in wins(his extra wins PLUS the loses he used to deal the Yanks)
Joba back to the pen if you sign Perez.

I have to admit, the Yankees have some serious heat in the rotation now.

                              2008 AVG's

                              Joba - 96.46
                              CC - 94.87
                              AJ - 94.79
                              Wang - 92.9

But I don't see the AJ contract turning out well.

lmao my favourite memory of A.J., is back at the Rogers center A.J. was pitching and a guy sitting beside my kept on yelling A.J! every time he pitched.

But anyway IMO, he is a very dependable pitcher, that you can get quality starts from.
