    Re: Giants!!!

a bit off topic, but i noticed that toshiyo shinjo is back with the mets. what's the facination with this guy? yes, he plays good defense, but if that's the only requirement for a major league baseball player, i could be in the league. seriously! i once had a conversation with a baseball fan from japan and he said that he didn't know why the major leagues wanted shinjo.

i was so glad to see shinjo waived from the giants. so in hindsight, would i want to see the shinjo-estes trade retracted? nah, with a $6M salary, estes is overvalued.

        Re: Giants!!!

Righetti's been a great pitching coach for them the last few years, one of the hold-overs from the Dusty era. Mentioning Estes, Righetti was able to calm him down a few times when he let the game get the best of him. Estes could be such a dominant pitcher at times, but he was too much of a head case. I still cheer for him, though.. unless he pitches against the Giants... hehe.

It was definitely a good thing to get rid of his contract. Shinjo was stellar at times in the field, but had a horrible bat. He was actually offended at batting 8th in the lineup, saying that it's a disgrace batting 8th in Japan. I say he's lucky to be playing in the Major Leagues. That's why they ran out and got Lofton last year.

It's hard to say yet how Alou handles the pitchers. He doesn't hesitate to take out a pitcher for any reason. He removed Worrell from a game with 2 outs in the 9th to bring in a lefty for the last batter. We'll see what happens when Nen gets back.

Last night was Jessie Foppert's ML debut. They had originally said that he would only start, but they shortened to a 4-man rotation because of the rainout on Saturday. He faced 7 batters in 2 innings, walking 1. He faced Bagwell and Kent and did fine. Alou decided to take him out in the 9th inning, probably not wanting him to face too much pressure his first time out.

I was at the game, and WOW... people started booing Kent before they even announced him coming up. It was a mixed reaction, though. There were a lot of people giving him a standing ovation. I had mixed feelings... he did so many good things while with the Giants... but man, I really don't like some of the things he said after he left.

Ainsworth going tonight. Hope he has another good game.

            Re: Giants!!!

Well, the Giants have been playing good ball, but they've been incredibly lucky too.

The other night against the Dodgers, the ball slips out of Marvin's hand and it turns into an out!!!?? First game against Houston they get 2 runs walked in a row. Last night, wild pitches and dropped balls gave them the game. All the games with the Dodgers were decided by one run. They haven't been hitting great, but luck has definitely been with them. If they don't get it going again soon, that luck will catch up with them.

Rueter going tonight. He was one of the ERA leaders at the beginning of last year too, before he floated back to earth. Let's hope he can keep it up this year.

And let's hope the game doesn't get rained out tonight.

Well Gamedude, sometimes its better to be lucky than good. I would be surprised if the Giants don't run away and hide with the NL west title.

i am a believer that if you work hard, luck will be on your side. those wild pitches and dropped balls would not matter much if the giants did not have men in scoring position. that's why you hustle for that extra base and sacrifice guys over. great teams are great at the little things and the giants so far have been doing it well, thus the 13-1 record.

                    GO GIANTS!!

                        Re: Giants!!!

Yes, I agree with both of you. I think luck is more present in baseball than in any other sport, so you take your breaks and run with them. I haven't seen any highlights of Royals games, but I'm sure they're feeling pretty lucky right now, too, but they wouldn't be where they're at now without being good, either. Winning that much is just not that easy to keep up, especially when you have a different pitcher going every night.

The Giants this year have been doing things though to keep teams on their toes, like drag bunts, stealing, hit and runs.... they have been creating a lot of opportunities for themselves, and maybe causing the opposition to rush their throws and such.

Ok, seems like I'm just talking to myself in this thread... but I'm just gonna keep on talkin' anyway.

I've enjoyed the total domination of the Dodgers up to this point, but they were gonna have to lose to them sometime. I'm just glad they had their meltdown right before an off-day. I'm kinda glad, too, that it wasn't on tv. There would have been a lot of yelling going on at my parent's house that I'm sure my baby neice wouldn't have enjoyed... hehe.

Looking forward to the Pirates series, even though I probably won't be able to see any of the games because of work. I've been anxious to see how Foppert does in his first start. There's been high expectations for him, and he doesn't look like the type that lets things bother him. That being said, he's still a very young rookie, so I'm sure he'll take his knocks like anyone else. The Pirates look a lot better than they did last year, but they won't have Brian Giles in the lineup I don't think. Should be a good series.
