The bit about Eck playing second was awesome. Talking about how he positions himself based on where the hitter will hit, the pitcher will pitch, and he gets to the right spot, as opposed to Cano who just closes his eyes, puts his glove behind his back, runs circles and divines the ball into his glove. Pure gold.

Re: Dusty Baker (and other assorted morons)
Colin Cowherd: This Rob Dibble thing really bothers me, and I'll tell you why....I think radio is raw. I think when radio is at its best, its uncomfortable. If you're not getting hate mail, get out of the business and go sell Hallmark cards. This is an uncomfortable business....What Rob Dibble said on his SIRIUS XM radio show, it wasn't even during a Nationals broadcast, to show you how thin-skinned they were. He was talking about Stephen Strasburg, who let's be honest, the guy's been babied. The guy had some very if not nebulous, kind of abstract injuries — stiffness, inflammation — little abstract. He didn't pull a muscle. Kind of unspecific, vague, abstract stuff....
He is quite literally the future of an entire franchise. The team was nowhere close to the playoffs. He was in college like eight minutes ago. You would prefer he be out there tossing 140 pitches a night for no reason?
Also, whether the injuries were "nebulous" and "abstract" or not, why the poop (I'm trying not to curse as much) would Rob Dibble — who is not, as far as I know, a licensed physician — say any****ingthing (oops) at all, one way or the other, about whether he should be pitching through them? He doesn't ****ing know **** (again, sorry) about what's happening inside Strasburg's arm. Not to mention the fact that, if anything, Dibble should have been saying, "You know what? I used to throw 102 and then I had 820 different arm injuries in six years and was out of baseball at like 30, and even though it's cool that I have a lot in common with Kenny Powers, it sucked that I couldn't play anymore, and I really hope this is nothing serious." Instead what he said was: "[unintelligible grunting]."Comment

Re: Dusty Baker (and other assorted morons)
Something I noted from before the season:
Mike Greenberg used the phrase "death bell" on Mike and Mike for the Twins season when he learned that Joe Nathan was out.
I'm going to email them right now and see if my scathing remark about the overrated nature of the closer position will make their show tomorrow. I doubt it.Last edited by ImTellinTim; 09-23-2010, 08:40 PM.Comment

Re: Dusty Baker (and other assorted morons)
The best paragraph of that day:
A fact that is unique to David Eckstein. Robinson Cano plays second base by running in circles, closing his eyes, and trying to feel the ball off the bat. Omar Infante plays second base by attempting to divine, through augury and calf-entrail-spilling, who will hit the ball to him and when. Ian Kinsler plays second base by putting in a little earpiece and having someone whisper to him what to do, like Brando used to do when he no longer bothered to learn his lines. Clint Barmes plays second base like a guitar, picking the entire second base area up and strumming it lightly, occasionally taking requests from the crowd. (You should hear Clint Barmes play "April Come She Will" on the acoustic second-base-area. It'll bring a tear to your eye.) (That might be the weirdest sentence I've ever written. **** it. I'm leaving it in. It's 12:25 a.m.)Too Old To Game Club

Re: Dusty Baker (and other assorted morons)
Under the heading of "Other Assorted Morons" this seems like a good place to post that it is being reported that the New York Mets have finally decided to fire GM Omar Minaya.
Manager Jerry Manuel will also not return so let the Joe Torre-to-the Mets speculation commence.Comment

@ rsox
Minaya won't be 'fired' per se...
he has an option in his contract whereby at his choice, he can choose to remian with the Mets in another capacity...
Torre spoke on the silly rumors last week after Francesa caught him off guard with some questions..Torre said he would NOT manage the Mets, nor speak with them this offseason

Minaya is signed for two more seasons at roughly $1.1 million annually. A source familiar with his contract confirmed language prohibits Minaya from being reassigned from that role, which is why it's unclear whether he will ultimately remain with the organization in another capacity.Last edited by ImTellinTim; 10-01-2010, 11:58 PM.Comment

@ ImTellinTim
I can actually see that possibly happening....
if much of his job was seriously hampered by owners who did not want to spend money on impact players...then hell...go to another team that perhaps is ready to REALLY spend, instead of stashing away the $$$
My guess is that the Mets will buy out his contract and tell him to take a hike.

Forgive me if I'm off base here because I don't follow the Mets very closely. But my perception is that the Mets have spent money. It's just that they've spent money unwisely.Comment

Re: @ ImTellinTim
no problem..thats fine...
while they have spent money...and at times they have made bad financial choices...as with Castillo and Perez' contracts....but thats not the real issue, since all GM's make bad moves...
Bay had the concussion since around all star break...a $65 million break...
They seem to like third tier players, or players who most know little or nothing about (Takahashi and Hessman) to name two.
Then for a great part of this season, they literally played with 24 players. Why? Because after Perez declined to go to the minors to work on his issues (which was his contractual right), they (upper management) did nothing that got him off the team, so Jerry was short-handed for most of this season.
Unreal.....

Re: Dusty Baker (and other assorted morons)
So you're saying that the Mets owners overruled Omar Minaya and were telling him what to do on all player contract decisions? Hell, if that was happening, why even hire a GM? Or are you saying that you want to keep Manuel with a new GM?
If it's the latter, then yeah, I can see where you're coming from. Manuel is getting lumped in with the purging of horrible GM decisions. Which sucks.Comment

@ ImTellinTim
yes...the undermining of Omar started in the middle of the '09 season....
he became less visible and when he did interviews, he towed the company line saying the Mets would stick with their players...and they were confident with their players....
a freakin mess.....

Re: Dusty Baker (and other assorted morons)
The Mets do spend money, they just don't spend it wisely.
The Mets are already commited to $113.25 million in guarenteed salaries next season and that doesn't count the guys making league minimum.
Even if ownership was undermining Minaya and telling him who to sign and what to sign them for, his track record before that started wasn't very good either.Comment

Originally posted by Joe MorganPeople are saying (Felix) Hernandez should win. I'm not saying he shouldn't. But how are you going to judge what he would have done if he was on the Yankees. It's tougher to pitch for the Yankees and win or the Twins than it is Seattle. All individual awards are team awards. My MVP awards were won because my team helped me. … I think the problem I have, though, with some statistics is we start to individualize the players. I don't want that. It's still a team game. ... When you start to individualize things like that, it takes away the team concept from the game. It's like a pitcher who goes out and pitches five innings every game and doesn't give up anything. Is he better than the guy who pitches nine innings and loses one every once in a while? The guy who pitches nine innings helps the bullpen. The guy who pitches nine innings makes it easier on the manager for the next few games. There are so many things that are involved other than just throwing a number on something. If people think I'm not for that, then they're right. Because I still think it's a team game.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment
