Re: You got WHO for HIM??
Did Bavasi ever make a trade that produced a player who was productive for the M's for any length of time?Unless I'm completely skipping over a trade, the Bedard trade is probably his best when it comes to acquiring production. That's sad considering how injured Bedard has been in that time and how much they gave up for him.

At least one of the best deadline deals:
Padres: OF Melvin Nieves, pitchers Donnie Elliott & Vince Moore
Braves: 1B Fred McGriffOriginally posted by Gibson88Anyone who asked for an ETA is not being Master of their Domain.

Re: You got WHO for HIM??
The entire Bavasi era with the Mariners is filled with these...
Traded away Rafael Soriano for Horacio Ramirez (ATL).
Traded away Carlos Guillen for Ramon Santiago and the other Juan Gonzalez (DET).
Traded away Randy Winn for Jesse Foppert (SF).
As already mentioned Cabrera for Eduardo Perez. Shin-Soo Choo for Broussard (CLE). Bedard for everyone but Ichiro and Felix (BAL).
I'm loving Zduriencik's trade with NYM/Cle for Franklin Gutierrez, Endy Chavez, Mike Carp, etc. for Putz, Green, Reed, and Valbuena.
Some historical ones from the M's.
Acquiring Heathcliff Slocumb for Jason Varitek and Derek Lowe (BOS).
Acquired Randy Johnson, Brian Holman (was good before injury), and Gene Harris for Mark Langston (MON).
Acquired Jay Buhner for Ken Phelp's bat (NYY).
Acquired Sterling Hitchcock and Russ Davis for Jeff Nelson and Tino Martinez (NYY). Doh!
Sent David Ortiz as the player to be named later to complete a previous deal for Dave Hollins (MIN).Comment

Re: You got WHO for HIM??
Can't believe I (and Oakfan) forgot this one for the A's:
Tim Hudson for Charles Thomas (Did nothing and is either rotting in minors or retired), Dan Meyer (highly touted prospect with an upside but plagued by injuries, since has been traded), and Juan Cruz (shortly traded and has been traded several times since, now with KC I believe.)
I remember Charles Thomas wore his socks high, so he had that going for him...
Juan Cruz? Jeez no clue.
Dan Meyer, talk about over rated and injury plagued.

Re: You got WHO for HIM??
He didn't do anything in Oakland, but Meyer has been pitching phenomenal in Florida this season having a 1.78 ERA, .91 WHIP in 41 games so far this year.Originally posted by Gibson88Anyone who asked for an ETA is not being Master of their Domain.

Re: You got WHO for HIM??
Rockies really haven't made that many trades
1993 - Sending Brad Ausmus, Doug Bochtler and a player to be named later who so happened to be Andy Ashby to the San Diego Padres for Bruce Hurst and Greg Harris.
Hurst ended up only pitching in 3 games for the Rockies, only 8 2/3 innings total. Greg Harris went 1-8 in 1993 for the Rockies, and 3-12 in 1994 for them. His ERA was 6.50 for them.
Ausmus ended up being a very solid catcher who played great defense and had an average bat. Ashby ended up going to the All Star game a couple times and helped lead the Padres in 1998 to the World Series. Not an elite pitcher, but a good one with the Padres.
This one didn't really work out for either side, but in 1995 Rockies traded Juan Acevedo to the Mets for Bret Saberhagen.
The 3 way deal between the Rockies, Braves and Marlins back in 2002.
Rockies send:
Mike Hampton to Braves
Juan Pierre to Marlins
Rockies receive:
Preston Wilson, Pablo Ozuna, Charles Johnson and Vic Darensburg
Braves send:
Tim Spooneybarger to Marlins
Braves receive:
Mike Hampton
Marlins send:
Preston Wilson, Pablo Ozuna, Charles Johnson and Vic Darensburg to Rockies
Marlins Receive:
Juan Pierre and Tim Spooneybarger
Also, having to pay part of Mike Hampton's contract, $30 million over 3 years, basically paid Hampton $10 million in 2003, 2004 and 2005
Seems like an absolute steal for the Braves until you realize they paid Hampton $16 million last year, and he had only 1 good year for the Braves, an okay year, 2 injury riddled seasons and he missed 2 years due to injury.
Marlins probably liked getting out of the contracts of Wilson and Johnson. Pierre was fantastic for them, and Spooneybarger was a decent reliever for 1 year for them. I'm curious as to what happened to him after 2003, was it injuries?
Rockies got one heck of a year out of Wilson in 2003 as he led the NL in RBI's. However, he was hurt pretty much almost all of 2004. Then shipped to Washington for Zack Day, JJ Davis and a player to be named later. Charles Johnson played 2 years with the Rockies, hitting for some respectable power but a measly .230 average. The main part of the deal for the Rockies was getting out of Hampton's huge *** contract, but they sacrificed having a good leadoff man of the future in Pierre.7 National Championships

Oh, and how about the 1993 deal between the Florida Marlins and San Diego Padres.
Padres send Gary Sheffield to Florida for some pitching prospects, Jose Martinez, Andres Berumen and some guy named Trevor Hoffman7 National Championships

Re: You got WHO for HIM??
Jack Cust, OF/DH, Athletics: So on a team filled with slap hitters and horrible LF defenders, the Padres decided to not give a hot hitting Jack Cust a chance. Well, they were right since he never had any major league success and his bat probably wouldn't outweigh his defensive shortcomings in PETCO, although recent LF'ers have shown otherwise. Why is this a bad trade? Well, the Padres traded him practically for nothing I believe. The trade was:
Athletics Receive:
OF Jack Cust
Padres Receive:
PTBNL or Cash
Considering I don't recall a PTBNL and the Padres practically not spending money... they gave Cust away for free.Comment

Re: You got WHO for HIM??
The Yankees/Pirates from last season, I still don't think people understand how badly the Pirates ripped them off.
Yankees get:
Xavier Nady - Who played half a season, has been injured ever since, and there's a good chance will never play for them again.
Damaso Marte - Who's been pretty much terrible since the trade.
Pirates get:
Jose Tabata - A top prospect whose bat has drawn comparisons to a young Manny Ramirez. Still developing, of course, but looking like he could be a future star.
Daniel McCutchen - Solid pitching prospect with good stuff. Right now I'd say he could project to a number 3-5 starter at very worst.
Jeff Karstens - Who's been a solid backend rotation guy right from the start, and a good long relief guy as well. Useful in any rotation.
Ross Ohlendorf - He's ranged anywhere from good to average this season. An above average number 3 starter.
Everyone was laughing at the Pirates in that trade, yet they got two very useful pitchers right out of the gate, a solid pitching prospect in McCutchen, and a potential star prospect. While the Yankees gained nothing of value. Excellent trade by the Pirates.
They made out way better there than they did in the Bay trade. That one I still feel was a missed opportunity of sorts, although not a terrible trade.
Red Sox get:
Jason Bay - Who's been an offensive machine for them since coming over, and is still young enough to be a longterm staple in their offense.
Dodgers get:
Manny Ramirez - Again, has been an offensive force, making their lineup legitimate and giving them a playoff push last year.
Pirates get (from Red Sox):
Brandon Moss - Who's been terrible as an every day player. Really, doesn't look like much more than a 4th OF type at best.
Craig Hansen - He hasn't pitched a game this year. Was pretty bad in the little time we seen him last year. At best, he's a project player.
Pirates get (from Dodgers):
Bryan Morris - A young and good pitching prospect. Hasn't really delivered at all in the minors, but he's still very young.
Andy LaRoche - Formerly a top prospect of the Dodgers, and then faded a bit. In his first full season with the Pirates, he's been solid. He does a good job working pitchers, decent at driving in runs. But he shows no signs of real power. At best, I think we're looking at a .290 15 HR 85 RBI kind of guy.
I hated the return we got from Boston. With a team so loaded with talent, how do you get a failed prospect relief pitcher, and a 4th outfielder, while giving up your best player in the process? You couldn't get one starting pitching prospect from them? I find that hard to believe, and I think Huntington didn't push hard enough.
Then there was the Nate McLouth trade this season. Overall, since Neal Huntington took over, I feel his tades have been good. He's done a solid job of rebuilding the team. The Nady/Marte trade was really fantastic, and the McLouth trade is also looking like a winner. The Bay trade is pretty much all dependant on how Bryan Morris turns out. If he pans out, and Andy LaRoche pans out, then that was a decent trade, not great, but decent. If they don't, then that's a bad trade, bad all around for the Pirates, since they still had another year left with Bay. They didn't have to trade him. Cleveland's offer was really much better than LA/Boston's. That had the Pirates getting Cliff Lee, Franklin Guiterrez, and Kelly Shoppach.Comment
