Damaso Marte - Who's been pretty much terrible since the trade.

    Pirates get:

Jose Tabata - A top prospect whose bat has drawn comparisons to a young Manny Ramirez. Still developing, of course, but looking like he could be a future star.

Daniel McCutchen - Solid pitching prospect with good stuff. Right now I'd say he could project to a number 3-5 starter at very worst.

Jeff Karstens - Who's been a solid backend rotation guy right from the start, and a good long relief guy as well. Useful in any rotation.

Ross Ohlendorf - He's ranged anywhere from good to average this season. An above average number 3 starter.

Everyone was laughing at the Pirates in that trade, yet they got two very useful pitchers right out of the gate, a solid pitching prospect in McCutchen, and a potential star prospect. While the Yankees gained nothing of value. Excellent trade by the Pirates.
The trade hasn't worked out for the Yankees, and unless Marte regains his form, it won't end up helping them.

But Ohlendorf being an above average #3 starter? He was awful last year and has been bad this year. At best he's a 5th starter, ideally he's a long reliever, or not on your team.

Kartsens has been a little better than I thought he could be, I didn't think he could stick on a major league roster, and he's actually been a pretty good reliever this year, but he is not a good starter, and he doesn't have the stuff to pitch in the AL.

McCutchen could be #3-5 starter. I wouldn't say at worst though, that's what you hope for out of him.

Tabata is the key. The Manny comparisons always were and still are crazy, but he's got the potential to be a really good player. If he turns into an all star, than the Yankees will regret this trade. If he doesn't, then it wasn't a bad trade for the Yankees, and it was only a good trade for the Pirates in that it helped them accomplish their goal of spending as little money as possible.

You're referring to this one as a bad trade for the White Sox correct?

Ohlendorf has been good. I probably overrated him a bit with the number 3 starter statement, true. But a good backend guy, he has been that. Most starts he's giving up 3 runs or less, and he gives you innings. What more can you ask for?

Karstens is a spot starter/long relief guy, and he's been fine in that role. In tight spots, like Charlie Morton getting hurt in his first inning as a Pirate, Karstens has come in and pitched well to fill in the void(s).

Daniel McCutchen has good stuff, a lot better than was advertised. He could be a legitimate force at MLB level if he can put it all together. So yeah, I'm expecting to see him as a 3-5 starter at worst. People said the same stuff about Charlie Morton when we got him: "He's nothing more than maybe a number 5 starter". Yet if you look at his actual stuff, the guy is clearly better than a 5 starter.

I don't see how the Manny comparisons are "crazy". The kid was 20 years old when we got him. Nobody was saying "He's got the bat of Manny, watch out!" It was just that he looked very promising at that age.

Even if Marte somewhat pans out, the Pirates still ripped them off. Marte's been awful to begin with, and at best, wow, you got a lefty specialist. While the Pirates got three pitchers, two who have helped their staff quite a bit already, and a possible superstar prospect OF.

The purpose of the trade from the Pirates perspective is to pick up pitching help to fill in holes. They did exactly that. They also picked up two promising prospects. Three every day pitchers, and a promising OF prospect. They did all of this while giving up nothing of value to them, and nothing that has panned out for the Yankees.

While Ross Ohlendorf/Jeff Karstens are hardly star pitchers, both have been productive as hell at their role(s). It's not like they were picked up to be ace pitchers.

I'm confused as to what this thread is asking. Is it asking if you've given up studs for trash? Or if you're giving up trash for studs? And if it's both, then shouldn't the title just be "Worst trades ever?" or something like that?

It started with just informing everyone about how certain star players got to where they are. But everyone just started listing their best or worst trades and so on.

Re: You got WHO for HIM??

My original intent was players that turned out to be good/great players (the HIM) and the players your team game up to get him, with these players being never heard of's or players that never came of anything.

Not really specific trades, like for example, say the Braves had since traded Hudson to the Red Sox and went on to win a Cy Young, I would still have included him in the players I mentioned because of what the A's got in return for him.

However, I wasn't clear at all and there has been some interesting trades that were mentioned that I hadn't known about.
