Giles is amazing.... it's a sad state though that he really has no one hitting around him for protection (aside from a recently hot-hitting Aramis Ramirez) so he really doesn't get quality pitches to work with. Giles is normally walked once a game at least. And when he DOES get quality pitches to hit, he brutalizes them. He's got speed, he steals bases, he's got glove... I've seen COUNTLESS diving "Andruw Jones-esque" plays in the outfield, and now this homerun he robbed in the game vs. Cleveland..

I have to place the blame more on Mac than on the players as far as getting better hitters around Giles. His incessant tinkering with the lineup is driving me crazy, and stupid things like placing Jack Wilson in the 7 spot especially so. If I were Mac, I'd make this the everyday lineup:

            Kenny Lofton (no brainer)
Jack Wilson (best bunter on the team (aside from Reboulet) and he did well here earlier in the year)
            Giles (duh)
            Ramirez (duh again)
Randall Simon (when healthy) Otherwise Matt Stairs can play first. Bench Young's sorry ***
            Reggie Sanders
            Jeff Reboulet
            Jason Kendall
            Pitcher

Yes, I'm advocating Kendall in the 8 spot. He gets decent contact and is largely a singles hitter, which is exactly what you want your 8 hitter to be. He is a crappy bunter either because he simply lacks the skill, or refuses to do it, so he's a waste at #2. He also has never been an RBI man, so he's a waste in the 6 spot as well.

I've noticed that as well... I'm a HUGE Jack Wilson fan, myself...the guy has more heart than some teams combined..

I haven't rooted for a player to succeed as much as I have for Jack for as long as I can remember.

Last year, and earlier this year, I defended Mac, but after this incessant tinkering, I'm starting to think he needs to go... HOWEVER, he'll always be admired by me for his "stealing first base" episode a couple years back...lol

Supposedly, The Pirates would send Benson and Pokey Reese, once he's off the DL, to Atlanta for Marcus Giles and a minor league pitcher (don't know who). Pokey has a $5 million option for 2004 which Pittsburgh won't touch, but Reese apparently is willing to re-negotiate the option at much less money.

Brian Giles is a bargain at $7.5 million, sad to say. I'd love him to stay in Pittsburgh the rest of his career. I think there is something to the Marcus Giles rumors. They both want to play together and it may help keep Giles in Pittsburgh when his contract is up. Even if Pittsburgh has to sweeten the deal some. Hey, we'll also throw in Brian Boehringer!
