This is something I can't stand. If you are a HOFer you are a HOFer. Writers who don't vote for players on the first ballot because they aren't good enough to be a first ballot HOFer (whatever that means) are idiots and should have their credentials revoked.

The people who are boohooing about the 3000 benchmark, need to look at Bert Blyleven or Dale Murphy.Comment

Re: Derek Jeter
Dale Murphy? How could you even compare these two.
The whole being a Yankees thing is really annoying. You guys are acting like the yankees were a dynasty before he joined them. They did not win a title since 1978 until Jeter arrived.
Were just supposed to remove the 5 rings and all other accolades he has because he did it as a Yankee? What sense does that even make?Comment

But why should we remove those facts? He was a Yankee, we cant go back in time and take away the 5 rings he has with them.

Because Derek Jeter isnt the only candidate to make it into the HOF and not every candidate was fortunate to play for a team that had endless resources, the team shouldnt matter.
Thats if youre going to be fair. But if he gets 3000, he should be a lock. As I said before, if he gets 3000 and you didnt let him in, that wouldnt be fair. But if he doesnt get 3000, Im not really sure he's better than Dale Murphy or Bert Blyleven.
BTW, I think both Dale Murphy and Bert Blyleven should be in, but if theyre not, and Jeter also ends up just short of the benchmark, I dont see why its a certainty that he should get in and not Blyleven or Murphy.Last edited by RonnieG; 11-07-2010, 01:41 PM.Comment

Re: Derek Jeter
Its easy. Dale Murphy was awesome for a stretch of time back in the 80s and ended up a few HRs short of a HOF bench mark. Consequently, he's not in.

Sure Yankees had "endless resources" but you still have to go out their and play the games and Derek Jeter has some of the best post-season numbers in history and plays in history. Im sorry but Im not going take away a guys accolades just because of the team he played for, that's not right.
The 3000 hits is no bench mark. IMO Derek Jeter is a first-ballot hall of famer if he retired today even without the 3000 hits. Sure playing for the Yankees has given him alot of hype and respect but does not take away from the numbers the guy has put up.
If it wasnt for Derek Jeter the Yankees would not have those 5 titles and that is what guarantees him a Hall of Fame spot IMO.Comment

If Jeter is so valuable, then why are the Yankees spending another 180 million on salary? Why is that even necessary?Comment

Re: Derek Jeter
1. Bert Blyleven was a pitcher and Dale Murphy was a completely different player. There is no point in comparing them to Jeter.
2. Just because there are guys who should be in the hall of fame and aren't, and guys who are in the hall of fame that shouldn't be, does not mean they should continue to make mistakes.

Re: Derek Jeter
You do understand that a player's position matters a great deal when it comes to his value, right? Even taking away his postseason success or sketchy Gold Gloves or "Yankee mystique", Jeter's one of the top 5 offensive shortstops ever. With his numbers, he's a first-ballot HOF'er even if he spent his career in Kansas City and never made the playoffs.Originally posted by Thrash13Dr. Jones was right in stating that.
