I am not worried. When he connects he is making some hard solid contact. He is just unlucky since they are right at guys.

It will come around for him.

His BABIP is ridiculously low, and he has roughly the same line drive rates as previous years. All his other peripherals, including contact rate, swing rates, SwStr%, all check out to levels from previous years.

So to sum it all up: he's been ridiculously unlucky. Wait a few weeks and he'll be fine.

      NBA: Indiana Pacers (42-13)

NCAA: Purdue Boilermakers (FB: 1-11, BB: 15-12), Michigan Wolverines (FB: 7-6, BB: 19-7, H: 15-10-3)

Thank you for that summary. I have no ****ing clue what any of that first paragraph means.

He has a .156 batting average on balls he hits in the field. Pretty much all batters hover around .300, since Crawford is faster and beats out some infield hits his career BABIP is .330. So pretty much he's been unlucky so far and he's hitting balls right at guys, which no one has any control over.

In addition to what Sandman said...

BABIP = Batting Average on Balls in Play. It's basically a measure of how lucky a guy is. You look at his current season BABIP and compare it to his career BABIP. If it's lower, that means he's unlucky at the moment. If it's higher, that means he's lucky, since any player's BABIP usually goes back to career levels over the course of the season.

As was said earlier Crawford's BABIP is .160 right now. His career BABIP is .330 due to his speed and the number of line drives he hits (line drives are the hardest type of hit for a defense to get a guy out on). Over the course of the season, Crawford's BABIP will get back to .330 and all his other standard stats (AVG, OBP, SLG) should follow.

I only mentioned all the other stuff to say that Crawford's playing style is the same. If his playing style changed, then it would be reasonable to expect a change in BABIP from career levels.

Exactly. And great explanation on it.

He is making solid contact, a LOT, just has been unlucky. It will all settle in, and this will all be a non issue. Francona just needs to bat him 2nd and just keep him there. Pedroia proved he can hit ANYWHERE in the lineup.

I think Francona's trying to avoid batting him 2nd because that would mean 3 lefties in a row since he's set on hitting Gonzalez 3rd. And yeah, Pedroia is great anywhere. If he hit 5th all year he could easily get 100 RBI's, heck he got 80 RBI's 2 years ago batting 2nd.

I understand that, but you can easily swap Youk and A-Gon with little effect.

And Crawford hits lefties as well as A-Gon

I'm not agreeing with it, I'm just pointing that out. He said somewhere that he really wanted A-Gon batting in the first, hence moving pedroia back down to 2nd.
