He could have grown bored there for all we know and taking a team like the Cubs that is way at the bottom of the barrel is a challenge for anyone. If he leads them to the WS with the moves he can make over those 5 years............who ends up looking like a hero to Cubs fans and baseball? Theo Epstein for doing that.

Re: Epstein to Cubs?
Just heard from a Boston writer on Jim Rome......he penned an article about how Boston pitchers were in the clubhouse drinking beer, eating fried chicken and playing video games during games......
Hence the collapse, and hence the departures of Epstein and Francona, IMO......
Team fell apart and didn't seem to care.Comment

For those OS members not here in Boston. Theo and Francona are being everated on talk radio. All kinds of explosive articles today in the papers & twitter. In the words of Michael Ray Richardson: "The ship be sinkin".

Glad I wasn't the only one thinking this. I'm sure there's a lot of things going on in every MLB clubhouse similar to this all year long.Comment

Re: Epstein to Cubs?
Well, regardless, Quade HAS to go. Clearly he spent 20something years as an assistant and bench coach for a reason. He was in over is head.
Also would like to echo that point that BleacherBum made. Clearly our farm system and player development is going to instantly improve with him around. Which is a department we are incredibly deficient in. Years of botched drafts, missed prospects and many busts needs to come to a end.
Hendry did a horrible job in that regard, among other things. However it has been on the upswing since we hired the new scout. (Cant remember his name off hand but discovered Castro) Right now the only thing to look forward to next year is the immense amount of payroll coming off the books. Just hope, like I stated before, that Epstein doesn't blow it all and understands that this is at minimum a 2 year rebuilding project.
Maybe he can bring Papelbon with him and swing something for CJ Wilson this year. We need pitching so bad.Comment

Re: Epstein to Cubs?
Never understood these psychos who have amazing positions and unbelievable legacies already willingly leave because they "want new challenges" Mind-boggling to me. Gotta be something else that forced him to leave, because I'm not sure I can ever buy that thought process.Originally posted by Thrash13Dr. Jones was right in stating that. Re: Epstein to Cubs?
First, I wish the Cubs fans much luck. I love the lovable losers but at some point they gotta actually get to the dance and win it. Cubs fans have suffered for YEARS. I'd like to see them actually win it all.

Gillick also knew that the team would need to be overhauled and didn't feel like having to do that while having to operate on a much smaller budget than he was used to so he took a year off and went to Baltimore.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Epstein to Cubs?
I highly doubt that 1. Quade or Zambrano will be in a Cubs uniform next year. I mean did you watch the Cubs this season? Did anyone make more questionable managerial decisions than Quade? You don't want that on your team going forward, rebuilding or not. 2. The Cubs will go after someone, you would have to be a fool to believe that with the amount of payroll that they are going to have available that they wouldn't go after one of the big guys.Comment
