The Red Sox had the guts to ask for Starlin Castro or pay all of John Lackey's contract. Cubs finally talked them down to 3 minor league players.

They're smart...might as well throw out every single ridiculous option (Garza, Castro, Lackey, top prospects) before you "settle" in hopes someone from the Cubs has a ****** moment.

If I were to say that I was glad Hendry was gone, that would be the understatement of the century.

And LOL at the Red Sox. They realize that this is for Theo Epstein and not Adrian Gonzalez right?

It'll be a while before we can evaluate his two big trades. So far he had gotten talented young players that need to prove that they can play at the MLB level, but what I like is that he knows that as a small-market team that will probably have payroll limitations for a while because of a procrastinating owner, in order for the Padres to be successful, not only do they need an infusion of young talent, but also players they can control. Instead of taking MLB-ready prospects who don't have that high of a ceiling along with a good young player who only has two/three years left before arbitration, he decided to take the risk with taking two higher ceiling, unproven-young prospects. He also managed to get two starting pitchers who may fight for a rotation spot in 2012 for the price of a set-up man instead of settling for less for a closer in a saturated trade market.

He's had moves backfire on him such as the Ludwick trade (which was good at the time and really didn't cost the Padres anything), Bartlett trade (no SS in the farm system, more towards KT and Alderson of the previous regime), Cantu and Hawpe. But in his short time here, it was a lot different than KT's plan, or lack there of.

Thanks ZM, I think if he had stayed, Hoyer would've had this team built for some sustained success given what the organization needs. However, I think he probably would have gone over to the Cubs with Epstein regardless of whether the rumors of Moorad forcing some moves such as the Orlando Hudson extension were false.

Well that gives me a little better understanding. It will be interesting to see what he will do with a significantly bigger payroll than he had in San Diego.

Reading a little more, I was excited to see his comments about possibly trading Heath Bell this season. Shows me that he doesn't fall in love with a big name player and will move him if it can make the team better. That gives me promise, because that has been one of the Cubs biggest problems and why we are in the situation we are in the first place.

Bud Selig might get involved as a "mediator" in the Cubs/Sox talks if they don't settle anything soon.

Reports are sour grapes have kicked in.

Sounds like compensation had been agreed on, and then I guess it wasnt good enough anymore.

                EDIT: From a few outlets
Source tells me Cubs/Sox negotiating teams have reached agreement *multiple* times before deal was nixed by John Henry.

Lot of reports still have the Sox looking to have one of Theo's worst moves ever (Lackey) go with him.

No way should the Cubs get stuck with Lackeys contract. That is the Red Sox problem not ours. We have our own overpaided bums to try and get rid of.

According to many outlets. It's done, for Real Now.

I still don't see what's changed, since they still haven't agreed on compensation.

Maybe, I'm just waiting for something bad to happen.

Okay so now that Theo is resigned from the Sox, looks like his first deal will be for himself. I'm just hoping that we don't give up Brett Jackson. Everything is official as of tomorrow, and Epstein will be the Cubs President of Baseball Operations. I see the Jed Hoyer announcement coming very soon

                            Excited.

It won't be Brett Jackson or Trey Mcnutt. What I've read it's most likely Ryan Flaherty, Chris Carpenter, or another SP I believe Jeff Beliveau.. Is what people are guessing.

What a breath of fresh air. The press conference was all business. There were no stupid mentions about curses, billy goats, no jersey or cap display. I was impressed with Epstein.
