Well that Hatteberg guy's probably still good. They made a big deal out of him.

He's not? Well do they have anybody good?

Maybe Cespedes is hoping to defect to Japan and play in the NPB.

Wow, that is a shocker. Nice move by the Athletics which hopefully will pay off with some more butts in seats.

I have a question for Athletics fans: With Cespedes now in the outfield, what would it take for you to move Michael Choice?

Cuban defectors usually take a year or two to really get it going at the big league level. If Cespedes shows growth but still has "under the radar" type numbers I think Oakland can get lucky and sign him to a pretty good deal.

Though, it wouldn't surprise me if Beane is just using this as a way to flip him and get cheaper talent.

(I know double post but I just saw this)

I love how screwed up salaries are in baseball what with David Ortiz being rewarded a 14.57 million one year deal in arbitration.

At this point in his career he isn't even worth half that.

Pretty sure he's gunna get traded at some point regardless of what numbers he puts up...Just the usual Oakland philosophy

This deal isn't that bad, is it?

He did go .309/.398/.554 last year with 29 HRs. And his 2010 numbers were pretty good too.

I'd be surprised if he turned in another 4.2 WAR season between now and the end of his career, but this isn't a terrible deal for a guy who is still one of the best designated hitters in the game.

On the Ortiz deal, that's just the nature of how the MLB's arbitration system works. Once he accepted arb he was guaranteed to make at least as much as he did last year. He and the team agreed on a deal with a bit of a raise, nothing out of the ordinary there.

I don't see how this has anything to do with screwed up salaries.

I know but it's still screwy to me that a guy at Ortiz's age can basically get 14 and a half million in the bank when he's on the downside of his career but yeah it's only a one year deal. I just had a chuckle at the dollar amount is all.
