Yea I raised an eye when I saw that too. I guess I shouldn't be surprised with the current MLB way of overbuying, but I would have been ok with 7 mil. But 14.5 mil for 1 year? That's overpaying.

The real disturbing thing is the Red Sox had to go this route because if they hadn't, someone would have paid Ortiz that amount anyway.

Baseball GMs. I would never have them manage my money.

I'm an outsider, but it seems that this could be a very big sign that they'll be moving to San Jose, and with it a newer park and more revenue to use.

I wish they could have done something to stay in Oakland. I grew up a Tigers fan, but remember when the A's were killing everyone. It'd be a shame to see them move.

They couldn't sign him for 7 million, that's not how arbitration works. Once he accepted arbitration it effectively became impossible to sign him for anything less than what he made last season. There wasn't any "overbuying" involved.

You can question whether they should have offered him arbitration in the first place, but not what he signed for once he accepted.

Yea, I have to question if they should have offered him arbitration in the first place. Obviously, Big Papi has some years left in him, but that's quite alot. However, I guess it's valid to point out that it is the Red Sox making this move, and they can afford it.

At least this way they get him on one year. Someone else probably throws two or three at him.

Thankfully, Ortiz chose to see an arbitrator rather than throw a preemptive heart attack strike on a Yankees fan.

I would have thrown my hands (and much more) in the air if I saw Ortiz sign for three years with a middling small-market team.

Yeah, i can't help but be negative regarding anything the A's....do i want him to put up good numbers? of course....when an unknown comes onto the scene and instantly becomes your highest-paid player, red flags have to go up..especially considering it's Oakland

                        Hooray! Another mediocre player.

                        Season looks promising.

Even if the San Jose deal was now, it wouldn't matter. By the time the stadium is built and ready his contract will be expired.

A's need to move to San Jose, it'a a larger market, with frankly a much higher income base to support the team.

Looks like the Pirates get A.J. Burnett from the Yankees in exchange for a couple prospects.

Good move on both sides. Playing in the NL and at PNC should help Burnett.

I do hope that the Pirates can at least get to the .500 mark this year. They seemed like shoe-ins last year but managed to blow it with their awful second half. I think that bad call from the Braves game probably led to it.
