#1 was Alex Rodriquez to the Rangers

#2 is Albert Pujols to the Angels

A-Rod spent three years in Texas and put up these numbers:

      2001: 52 HR, 135 RBI and a triple slash of .318/.399/.622
      2002: 57 HR, 142 RBI and a triple slash of .300/.392/.623
      2003: 47 HR, 118 RBI and a triple slash of .298/.396/.600

The dude averaged 52 HR, 132 RBI and a triple slash of .305/.395/.615

He also won an MVP award during this span and then was traded (and thus eliminating his salary from Texas' books) for a second basemen who played two All-Star seasons in Texas before being traded for prospects himself.

How that translates into being the worst free agent signing ever is beyond me.

Didn't the Rangers pay him about $60 million after he left in that trade?

Yeah, I'm not sure on the exact number to confirm that one way or another, but I do remember a big fuss when he was extended that dealt with the Rangers no longer having to pay him.

Still doesn't make him the worst free agent signing ever. He was basically the best right handed hitter in all of baseball during that 3 year stretch with Texas.

Agreed...plus the mention of Pujols isn't relevant yet. We don't know if Albert will go on a tear for the next 10 years and hit .350 with an average of 50 HR a season or if he'll bat below the Mendoza line and hit 5 HR a year (doubtful either way, but we really don't know what his production will be for the length of the contract, so calling it the "worst FA signing ever" is a bit ridiculous at this moment in time.)

I definitely agree with you. I was just pointing out the notion that trading him took his contract off their books was not true. It actually handcuffed them for a bit and was a factor in their financial troubles.

AROD put up a 7.8, 10, and 9.3 WAR in his 3 years with the rangers. And he was beast with the mariners as well.

TBH the only other guys you can compare him to (in the last 10 years or so) are Barry Bonds and Pujols.

3rd worse signing is Prince Fielder

Cole Hamels is the fifth. He hasn't even hit free agency yet, but since we're predicting the future...

Bobby Bonilla's isn't the "worst", but still pretty ridiculous/funny.

                                How do you figure?

He only played there for two seasons and put up pretty respectable numbers.

                                1999: 33 HR, 108 RBI and a triple slash of .281/.358/.508 (7.1 million salary)
                                2000: 36 HR, 117 RBI and a triple slash of .272/.365/.498 (11.1 million salary)

I mean, I know those aren't MVP caliber numbers but those are terrific in terms of value compared to plenty of others.

He got injured and missed all of 2001, but then was traded.

I don't see how this is anywhere close to the worst contract ever.
