Re: TWINS

Ryan DID have to trade AJ. If he keeps him on the team for one more year, he becomes arbitration elgible, and the Twins aren't going to give him the large contract he'd be awarded with Mauer waiting in the wings. Other teams know that as well, thereby decreasing the Twins' leverage in any trade talks. Trading him this year allows Ryan to negotiate with numerous teams, drive up the price, and bring back quality talent in return, which he did.

As for AJ's strikeouts, comparing him with Posada doesn't work. Posada's strikeouts come with large homerun and RBI totals. AJ's 7 HR's don't justify all the swings and misses. He is a good catcher and probably should have made the all-star team last year, but his loss won't mean a thing to the Twins this season. Mauer is already better defensively, and while he may not hit .300, he has much better plate discipline, and will most likely have a better on base percentage, which is more important.

Ryan traded AJ for our new closer, and 2 top level pitching prospects (Liriano is a lefty that hit 98 on the gun this winter!!). The trade brought us more than AJ could have on the field this year.

As for Eddie, he will not be missed. I expect him to have a sub-par year in Seattle this season. He does not have GREAT stuff, which is fine when you're closing games in the weak AL Central. We'll see how his numbers look trying to shut down teams in a tougher division. Nathan has 3 quality pitches and can get a strikeout in a tough spot. He's a veteran who has had success in a tough division, and has pitched in the playoffs and a pennant race. He's an unproven closer, but i expect him to excel in that role.

Re: TWINS

****I meant to say that AJ is arbitration elgible this year (he won) and a free agent next year. The Twins weren't going to pay him big free agent money after this season with Mauer ready, so they traded him when they had leverage. If they waited, they would have lost their leverage with other clubs interested in him, knowing that he would be on the open market next summer.

the twins are the probabe for me in the AL Central they step up in the season but they suck in the Playoffs... if they dont play the Yanks untill the AL Champioship we should be fine (if we make it there) So i think that they have a chance..

I never disputed that the Twins should have kept AJ given the money issue. I just pointed out that you made it sound like AJ was dead weight and we needed to get rid of him because he was a horrible player. Given the Twins financial constraints, it was a very good trade that gave us one good Major League ready pitcher and to good young pitchers, not to mention how much money it saved us. Both offseason moves were good, but if we could afford $70M a year I would have been all for keeping AJ, Eddie, Hawk, and Milton this offseason. If you asked Terry Ryan what would have been done if Pohlad would have allowed the payroll to go up this year, he would tell you that Hawk, Eddie, AJ, and probably even Milton would be Twins this year.

Unfortunately, the Twins can't spend that type of money so they have to be smart and make some tough decisions. The moves this offseason set us up better in the future, but when you have the chance to win you win now; I think the Twins have done both this year. They are set up good in the future and still have a good chance to take the AL Central this year. But if you think they have a better chance of winning this year than they would with Hawk, Eddie, AJ, and Milton, you're kidding yourself.

I know it may sound like I'm against these offseason moves but I'm not. I'm simply saying that money aside, when you have the chance to win, you go for it. But given the financial constraints by that tight @$$ Pohlad, this was a pretty darn good offseason, which would have been better had we re-signed either Eddie or Hawk. I was saying in August that if the Twins could sign two of their free agents (Stewart, Guardado, & Hawkins), it would have been a really good year. But by the time the Twins had money freed up after the Pierzynski and Milton trades, Hawkins had already signed with the Cubs.

I think the Twins would be set up much nicer had they signed Guardado to a deal this offseason. That may not have been possible, however since the Twins would probably be best off with a one maybe two year deal (because they have Jesse Crain in the minors who could be ready for the Majors by the end of this season), but Eddie wanted a three year deal. I would feel more comfortable with our team this year if the Twins would have bitten the bullet and signed him for three years (I think they offered him a three year deal but it was for quite a bit less than what he signed with the M's for).

As is, we have a lot of questions with our pitching due to lack of depth and we'd be much better off with another established guy in the bullpen. That's why I'm hoping that either JD Durbin or Grant Balfour can come up big in spring training and make the team rotation. That would allow Helling to be used in long relief and Silva to be moved to middle relief, giving us more depth in the bullpen.

SP - Johan Santana
SP - Brad Radke
SP - Kyle Lohse
SP - Carlos Silva/Rick Helling*/Grant Balfour/JD Durbin/Boof Bonser
SP - same as above (5 players competing for 2 spots

LRP - Grant Balfour/Rick Helling
MRP - Carlos Pulido/Aaron Fultz*
MRP - Carlos Silva/Michael Nakamura
SU - Juan Rincon
SU - JC Romero
CL - Joe Nathan

* = non roster invitee

A few other pitchers competing for spots:

Sean Douglass
Matt Guerrier
Adam Johnson
Colby Miller
Brad Thomas
Brian Wolfe
*Jesse Crain - closer of future, will likely start in AAA
*Seth Greisinger
*Pete Munro - could compete for middle relief/long relief
*Jeromy Palki
*Joe Roa - could compete for middle relief/long relief
*Kevin Tolar

If Bonser or Durbin don't make the team, they'll start in the minors. Most likely Silva and Helling will make the rotation and Balfour will be the long reliever. Silva would be either a long reliever or middle reliever if he doesn't make the rotation. If he does, Nakamura could be in the other middle relief spot. I'm hoping either Durbin or Bonser can make a rotation spot and allow Silva to slide into the bullpen, where he was pretty solid in Philadelphia the last couple of years.

Here's what I'm hoping for:

Rotation - Santana, Radke, Lohse, Durbin, Helling

Bullpen - Balfour, Fultz/Pulido, Silva, Rincon, Romero, Nathan
Minnesota Vikings
Minnesota Twins
Chicago Bulls
UNC Tar Heels

^^^Sorry about the novel up there, but I thought I'd post how I see the Twins pitching staff in spring training. Players in bold are pretty much locks to make the team where I put them.

SP - Johan Santana
SP - Brad Radke
SP - Kyle Lohse
SP - Carlos Silva/Rick Helling*/Grant Balfour/JD Durbin/Boof Bonser
SP - same as above (5 players competing for 2 spots

LRP - Grant Balfour/Rick Helling
MRP - Carlos Pulido/Aaron Fultz*
MRP - Carlos Silva/Michael Nakamura
SU - Juan Rincon
SU - JC Romero
CL - Joe Nathan

* = non roster invitee

That leaves the middle relief spot, where Pulido and Fultz will likely compete for a spot if Gardy elects to have to lefties in the bullpen.

Re: TWINS

Don't forget that the Twins won the Central last year after down seasons from Koskie, Hunter, Rivas, Guzman & Radke. Not to mention the loss of Milton and Mays, who had no positive impact on the pennant race. You have to believe that a few of those players are going to play better, and those are KEY guys.

As for the loss of AJ.....he was our #7 hitter. He hit .300, but that's it. Low HR, Low RBI, good defense.....he's a good catcher, not dead weight at all, but he will not be a major loss, as long as the guys mentioned above play better. We'll have Stewart at leadoff all year, Jaque Jones in a power spot, and hopefull LeCroy as the DH for 400 ABs.

Our rotation and bullpen are really up in the air. Radke, Santana and Lohse are locked in as starters. Silva and Balfour are my choices for 4 & 5. Silva is a good young arm that has already pitched a few years in the majors. It's time to get him into the rotation. Same with Balfour. He's stretched out as a starter now and he's been a tweener for a little while. I'd like to see them give him a legit shot. Helling can go back to North Dakota, or long relief. I'll be fine either way. I have a hunch that Rincon stays as a long man, and Nakamura gets the right-handed set-up spot. Fultz and Pulido are probably battling for the same roster spot, and Romero is locked in as a LH set-up man. Nathan is the closer, but watch out for Jesse Crain THIS YEAR. If he blows people away in spring training, they may give him a look early. Scouting reports list him as the top minor league bullpen prospect. He's got 3 pitches, which is one more than he needs as a closer. One way or the other, i think he wears a Twins jersey at some point this year. I have faith in Nathan, and i honestly believe we won't skip a beat without Eddie. I think it's Latroy's loss that will sting at times. A lot of "ifs" but it should be fun.
