It is a great pick up for them, if they go get more quality pitching to go with it. If not then it's better to have Wells on your team than not, but I can see where that would be a major let down to the fans since it's no where near what was promised to them, or what they were led to believe they would see the Padres make a run at.

Re: Padres get David Wells
$1.5 million plus incentive clauses for a veteran pitcher like David Wells seems pretty cheap and imo, a good signing BUT I hope this isn't the "big splash" that the Padres had in store. I seriously hope this isn't it. A couple of weeks ago, Kevin Towers said something about the next starting pitcher we sign would be the last but I really hope Wells isn't the last.
Right now I'm sorta frustrated at the lack of news involving the Padres and Maddux or any other big name free agent. I guess I was expecting too much, I mean Padre management only promised the fans an increased payroll and the "big splash" in free agency.
On a side note, I can't wait to hear Moores, Towers, and company cry poor from atop Moores' brand spanking new hotel overlooking Petco Park. Yup. The great view from that highrise makes a sub .500 finish look all the more dazzling.Comment

Re: Padres get David Wells
Actually, they're not gonna bring in any more pitchers. They're done. They said they were gonna sign one more starter and Wells is it.
The signing of Wells – who has agreed to an incentive-laden contract with a base salary of under $4 million – also means the Padres will not sign Greg Maddux.
"We are only going to sign one more starting pitcher," general manager Kevin Towers said last week after signing Sterling Hitchcock and Ismael Valdes to round out the bottom of the rotation.
Garbage. What a bush league organization. Fed the fans a fistful of lies for 3+ years.Comment

Re: Padres get David Wells
That's almost as bad as what the Brewers did.
I wonder where Maddux will end up now. I was hoping either Padres or Cards, but they both seem to have their starting rotations completed already. I wonder if the Maddux to Red Sox rumor has any value.Comment

Re: Padres get David Wells
I think the fall of the Yankees is coming, and players are starting to sense it. You would have thought Pettitte would be a lifetime Yankee. Wells never wanted to play for anyone but the Yankees. Now they are getting out. Wells could be a good pickup. He pitched very well early on for the Yankees when he was getting back in shape, he got lazy towards the end of the year though and wasn't the same guy.Originally posted by Jay BilasThe question isn't whether UConn belongs with the elites, but over the last 20 years, whether the rest of the college basketball elite belongs with UConnComment
