Yeah, he had the minor league deal with the Yankees, which most were pretty certain he was going to take that, but as you can see, that's obviously not the case. David Wells could be a very solid starter for SD, but obviously not an ace. He needs to keep healthy if he can, which is difficult for him to do. If he does, then he's a very solid SP with very good control.

That now leaves us with Jon Lieber as our #5 starter. Which isn't bad, if he can pitch well coming off of TJ surgery. Chances are, he'll be a little rusty coming back from the surgery, since he hasn't pitched in a while and is coming off a surgery. But once he gets through that, he could be really good, seeing as he's got a good offense and was a 20 game winner in the past, which shows that he could still be a solid producer, but I wouldn't say a 20 game winner again just yet. However, other possible signings could be possible, that have already been mentioned in the thread. I think no matter what, the Yanks will still be able to contend and have a good season despite all the players that they are having to replace. They have picked up Sheffield and Kevin Brown/Vazquez combo will be good. It will be interesting to see who else they look to get, and should set up for another exciting season!

I remember there was all that talk of bringing in a big name veteran who will mentor the young staff.

I don't think I would want any of my young pitchers modeling the habits of Wells.

That talk was with Maddux, then Wells came into play as a possible fifth started. KT's talk was sandwiching the youngsters with Maddux and Wells. We got Hitch and we thought he or someone else would be number 5 expecting to get Maddux, then KT out of the blue picks him up. Talk about breaking promises. I heard of a rotation of Millwoord/Maddux and Wells not Wells, the youngsters, and Hitch.

Actually at this point Hitchcock may not even start, remember they also signed Ismael Valdes,
so the rotation right now looks like:

                              Brian Lawrence
                              Adam Eaton
                              Jake Peavy
                              David Wells
                              Ismael Valdes

with Hitchcock filling in as a spot starter from time to time, but we'll see how it looks come opening day.
