$8M a year is $1M more than they wanted to pay, but the Cubs have a clause in his contract that lets them void the third year of the contract if he doesn't pitch a certain number of innings next year.

I didn't see that. If that's the case then it's not that bad of a deal. But if the cubs got stuck with him for that long without a void clause it could have been bad.

I think almost every Cub fan is thrilled about this. I wonder what the rotation will look like. Its kind of hard to put someone who has been as reliable as Maddux over the years at No 5. I think one thing that Maddux does is take a lot of pressure off Wood, Clement and Zambrano.

      <hr /></blockquote><font class="post">

yeah but i am a bit worried about the backlash wood and prior will face because they pitched so many innings last year, plus they now don't have a lefty in their starting pitching staff either.

      <hr /></blockquote><font class="post">

They play in a ballpark that doesn't really favor left or right handed hitter though. So having a lefty starter is not a huge deal. Not to mention that everyone of those guys with exception of Maddux are guys who can strike a lot of guys out, and Maddux is equally as effective against both righties and lefties, so I don't think this is critical.

If there is a better starting rotation in the bigs from the top to bottom, on paper that is, I sure haven't seen them.

You really can't qualify Estes as a left hander though, the guy maybe gave 2 innings an outing.

My lawyer friend James is a lefty. I don't want him starting for the Cubs.

I feel exactly the same way about Estes.

Estes is gone. It is unlikely that the Cubs were going to have a left-hander in the rotation, regardless of whether or not they sign Maddux. I believe that Juan Cruz was going to get his chance to fill out that 5th roster spot.

Now, with the potential addition of Maddux (assuming the Cubs are not going to label him the 5th starter), that makes Clement or Zambrano the 5th starter ... not too bad.

Maddux is sitting on 289 wins. Win #1 as a Cub, and win #300 as a Cub. If nothing else, it makes for good drama

I truly believe that Maddux is good for 12-15 wins this year (time will tell). Whereas Estes was only good for 8 last year. I know Maddux is on the downside of his career, but his ERA last year was almost a full 2 points better than Estes ... YIKES!! I'll take that.
