Its nice that everyone wants to drag Marx into this but, from a practical standpoint, what do you think would happen to prices at various ballparks if owners got into bidding wars over the right to pay 20 million for players?

All these Yankee fans like the poster 2 above me saying the other clubs dont spend money obviously have no sense of the league economiclly. Sure some dont but the vast majority of these teams only have a fraction to spend that the Yankees do. A profitable business has to make money and if they spent like the Yankees they wouldnt be. Thats not a knock on the yankees theyr doing it all by the rules. But adding unstability to the league while they do it.

My point is that the purchase price of a franchise is not the last outlay an owner should make. Some additional spending to upgrade is essential, and these guys have repeatedly shown no inclination to do so. Maybe the people buying ballclubs nowadays are not rich enough if all they can muster is the purchase and nothing more.

Guys like Selig and Pohlad (at least Pholad 2 years ago when he tried to contract his own team) make me sick because they are sitting on fortunes but using the size of their cities as an excuse for not being competitive.

It's a joke, and I'd argue that owners like Steinbrenner are better for the game than the ones who cop out, pocket his money, and don't even try to compete.

No it doesnt. When companies get too big they break them up. They did it with Standard Oil, they did it with AT&T BEll and now Microsoft. So do you now see that it is not the American way as much as you seem to want to think?

I guess I'm old school but I think having the Yankees as the 'Evil Empire' is healthy for baseball. I actually do not like the way the NFL salary structure is set up.

I never know who the hell is on who's team anymore. Teams go from 4-12 to 14-2 the next year and vice-versa. I like tradition, I like dynasties, I like the rise and fall of teams. Yeah it sucks when you're team sucks from the get go, but I'm a Cubs fan I'm used to it. I don't want every team being the same. In the NFL there isn't even really an upset anymore but in the 80's when you beat the Niners or Redskins it was VERY exciting. It could make your season. Now just close your eyes and pick a team, you'll have just as good chance as any.

I like to root against the Yankees. If all teams were the same then every game and every season would feel the same. This is just good theatre to me.
