How much of a difference does an announcer make for you in terms of enjoying the game? I have to admit when there is some low rent hack(or a high rent hack like McCarver), my level of enjoyment wanes considerably. Baseball has a lot of deadtime during which the spotlight and burden is on the announcer. I suppose, however, that there are some people to whom it matters little who is announcing. "Baseball is baseball" they might say but for me its entertainment and if the announcer is saying something stupid I get annoyed very easily. I start thinking of other things I could be doing. So, how integral are the announcers for you in terms of enjoying the game?

I hate announcers with no passion. I swear, some of these goons could watch a perfect game and end it like: "He just pitched a perfect game....howabout that....".....uhh....howabout some frickin' EXCITEMENT ya stupid HACK! Ruins the moment when they act like it's nothing.

Announcers are important to me especially if/when there are high flyballs/liners. My eyesight sometimes makes it hard for me to see EVERY little details so I have to rely on a good announcer to at least be able to describe some things even tho it's on TV.
Toronto has long had some crappy announcers tho for a while we had the best in the business with Dan Shulman and Buck Martinez together. I also don't like the over the top announcing I hear sometimes (i'm looking at YOU John Sterling!) Announcers who are able to tell stories that are relevant to the situation are always good in my book as well.
At least Buck has improved leaps and bounds in his announcing, (especially football) give him a couple more years and he'll be one of the best national voices out there. McCarver USED to be good. I dunno what happened to him. I guess he likes hearing his voice too much.
My fave announce crew right now are Lyaons and Thom Brennaman. They bring entertainment to the game yet aren't too far over the top. I especially liked their work in the NLCS last year with Al Leiter and I hope that FOX would bring Leiter on at the end of his career and put those 3 in a booth together.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club
