That's essentially what this is. I guess I'm differentiating it because the designated hitter, by rule, is a player who bats for the pitcher. This is how the MLB currently has it, and you can't forgo that in any way. A designated player bats for any position player, and they have marriage rules (they can drop to nine players by having flex can enter for DP on offense and DP can enter for flex on defense, and they can go back to ten at any time provided that burned players are substituted for).

Of course, if we get into the particulars that I mentioned with softball (or HS baseball) that the MLB probably shouldn't include, the DP position can swap with any player at any time in the game, but the starting DP is still the person married to the flex player. There are also re-entry rules, but that's for all substitution aspects of those leagues so that wouldn't apply in the MLB either.

I’m surprised we don’t see more pitchers throw on the same side of the rubber as their hand, and in fact do quite the opposite.

I realize that it makes for an easier straight shot, but you’d think that some of those lefty specialists (possibly of yore) could really make an uncomfortable at bat for a LHB if they came from such an extreme slot. Their breaking stuff would probably even prove to be more effective as well.

I didn’t pitch at all after high school and personally I threw from the middle of the rubber because I didn’t know better, but does part of it have to do with their toe dipping into the crevice in the middle of the plate rather than their heel, or are MLB mounds maintained well enough that there isn’t really a hole in the first place?

MLB mounds are maintained well enough that that isn't an issue.

As a righty, I always threw from the left side of the rubber. I've seen it done both ways though so I think it's a matter of comfort.

I only threw a slurve as a breaking ball so I used the left side because I wasn't at a disadvantage against righties because of that pitch but I couldn't use it at all against lefties (would come right into them, less than ideal).

So for me, facing lefties from the left side was a bit of an aid since I was going at them with just a fastball (very lively in that I threw three quarter and nothing straight at all), a changeup and occasionally a splitter.

well, I bet Manferd could be persuaded to have the batter stop his trot halfway to first and just head straight back to the dugout. might as well, since you can get walked w/o benefit of even one measly pitch.

I was a sinker/slider guy with a low 3/4 arm slot, so I was a far on the 3B side of the rubber as I could get to increase my deception.

That also probably contributed to me holding my school's career record for hit batters

Righty? I had the same slot, all my pitches dropped but I liked the left side of the rubber.

I liked the left side because of how much my fastball would move in to righties. Was able to saw a lot of people off because it looked so good to them at release.

(Also consistently led the league in hit batters because my ball not only sank but also tailed badly.)

Yeah RHP. I have stupid long arms, too. So I tried to use that to my advantage as much as possible to make it seem like I was throwing from behind RHHs.

I had a teammate that would move around on the rubber depending on the pitch and location. I don't know how he did it. I was so uncomfortable throwing from anywhere else.

I guess I'm not surprised that it had happened, but I'm surprised I hadn't heard about it.
