On a lighter note...in the Bucs/Rockies game the other day, Will Craig (he of the chasing down Javier Baez play) hit a dribbler down the first base line and the Rockies first basemen fielded it going towards Craig and applied the tag for the out. Craig stopped and hesitated for a second before the tag was applied to him and Greg Brown pointed out what everyone was thinking: how hilarious would it have been if Craig retreated to home plate.

Also, as to his play against Baez...Baez is a wacky kid. You've never seen a guy retreat back to home like that, so it's perfectly understandable if Craig's instinct to this peculiarity happened to be wrong. It's been annoying seeing all these people acting like that play makes him some sort of idiot. Glad to know none of you ever had a mental lapse during a situation you've never practiced or even thought of before.
Craig was an idiot during that play. He's been playing baseball for a long time and is at the professional level and all he had to do was either make the force out or get the tag eventually. The runner on 3rd was completely irrelevant. Call it a mental lapse, whatever, he was still an idiot on that play because he made a mistake that a pro should absolutely never make.

How can you play at the MLB level and not know one of the most basic rules in the game. Baez turns towards home to retreat. It should catch you off guard for half a second and then you should either just turn and get the force out or go and tag him because he has no way of getting away from you. It is completely laughable that Craig actually thought the runner on 3rd mattered in that situation at all.

Craig may not be an idiot overall, but he was brain dead on that play.

Lol, as if I have to have made the MLB to comment on the play now?

How many times in your life have you ever seen a runner on 3rd and 2 outs and the infielder fielders the grounder and goes to 1st base for the out because they know the run doesn't count if the force is made? We've all seen it a thousand times in our lives at the very least. That's literally one of the most basic baseball rules there are.

If we had a situation where there were 2 outs, a runner on 3rd, and the ball was hit to any infielder and they fired it home to keep the run from scoring instead of getting the force out at first, we'd all be scratching our heads wondering what in the world they are doing. Craig made that mistake and then some. It's an idiotic play and I don't know why some feel this weird need to try and defend him. The guy is obviously talented enough to make the MLB and I doubt he is making plays like that routinely, but the play is up there as one of the worst plays ever made by a fielder and deservedly so.

There wasn’t even a runner on 3rd, he was on 2nd. It was about as dumb of a play as you can make

The decade old Rueben Rivera baserunning blunder...this is actually worse in terms of the worst play ever.

Yeah, this is all on Craig. Which makes it all the more puzzling, when I saw the play I immediately thought "oh, the 1st baseman messed up", but all you could hear was about how high an IQ play it was from Baez. Glass half-full I guess.

It's a rule in softball that you may stop between home and 1B, but the moment you begin moving backwards you are automatically out. I imagined/assumed the MLB had the same exact rule, and was surprised when I didn't see anything of the sort enforced during that play.

So bizarre. The funny thing to me is seeing the home plate umpire make the safe call at home when the hitter could have still been thrown out at 1st, which would have nullified the run scoring. I guess technically the runner would have been safe at home but the run just wouldn't have counted. Either way it was all Manfred's fault.

It wasn't a "dumb" play so much as it was his initial instinct being wrong on an unprecedented event. "Dumb" is more when you actually think about your options and choose the wrong one. An infielder's instinct is to chase a nearby baserunner he's about to tag in a rundown. You never see the hitter retreat back to home, but it "looks" like a rundown. Bottom line, sometimes people's instincts get crossed up in scenarios they've never encountered. Hindsight is 20/20. Anyway, I just felt bad for Craig being dissed on r/baseball and Twitter, etc., instead of people just enjoying a cooky play. He won a gold glove in AAA, so he's fine.

No, it was a completely dumb play. Doesn't mean anything else about him or his career. He made a dumb play, he'll get over it.

It's no secret that game length has increased over the years, but breaking down the reasons why can be very informative.

Forget back in the day, even as recently as the 1980s, game times were an acceptable length.

One day I feel like they'll just rip off the bandaid in baseball and do a giant swoop of changes. Might take a major lockout like what happened in hockey 15 years ago before they made the necessary changes, but its bound to happen.

Baseball I feel like is the one sport out of the big 4 which should most consider some drastic changes within the game on and off the field.
