You wouldn't have to worry about this with the smaller field of teams in the MLB playoffs. Division Winner 1 plays the winner of the WC play-in, Division Winner 2 plays WC1.

Technically DIV2 could be worse then WC2/3 but that should be extremely rare with 8 teams per division.

2 divisions won't work also due to timezone. Imagine Cubs or Brewers facing west teams so often. Games would be at diff times too much.

Mlb current division format i think is best in sports. Nfl has best concept, but obviously their divisions don't actually have teams in proper locations.

Maybe do 2 divisions per league, and take the division winners and the next 3 best teams. WC1 is in, while WC2 and WC3 do their one game play-in. I would fully support 4 total 8 team divisions -- would be better for travel too like with the NHL's recent realignment. I assume the West Coast teams have a good bit more air miles then the more closely packed East coast teams.

If they expand playoffs it would have to be to 8 teams per league, and as much as I love more playoff games, the difficulty and small playoff field in baseball is something I don't think should be touched. Byes will never work.
I'm with you. I don't want more playoff teams, but I still want WC games.
With 32 teams, I'd like for them to go back to two divisions per league. I miss that setup from my younger years.
But I think Majingir is right in that they'll probably make up 8 divisions of 4 teams.

And if they do add more playoff teams, I hope they reduce the schedule from 162 back to 154.
It shouldn't affect stats much because 90% of the players never play more than 155 games anyway.
I love baseball, but November baseball is bad. The WS should be wrapped-up before Halloween.

Also If they do expand, I hope the league gets off the fence and either has a balanced schedule with NL and AL teams playing each other across the board, or they separate them entirely.

            Re: MLB Off-Topic

My guess at divisions with 2 per league and 4 per league:
            2 per league:
            AL East: Yankees,Red Sox,O's,Rays,Jays,Indians,Tigers,Expansion Team(Montreal?)
            AL West: Mariners,A's,Astros,Rangers,Angels,Royals,Twins,Wh ite Sox

            NL East: Marlins,Braves,Nats,Phillies,Mets,Pirates,Reds,Bre wers
            NL West: Giants,Dodgers,Padres,DBacks,Rockies,Cards,Cubs,Ex pansion Team
            4 per league:
            AL East: Yankees,Red Sox,O's,Rays
            AL North: Jays,Tigers,Indians,Expansion Team(Montreal?)*
            AL Central: Twins,Royals,Astros,White Sox*
            AL West: Mariners,A's,Angels,Rangers

The * means White Sox/Expansion team could change divisions depending where expansion team is located

            NL East: Mets,Phillies,Nats,Marlins
            NL North: Pirates,Brewers,Cubs,Expansion Team*
            NL Central: Rockies,Cards,Braves,Reds*
            NL West: Giants,Dodgers,Padres,DBacks

The * means Reds/Expansion team are interchangeable, depends on where expansion team is located.
Though in 4 team division, I'd prefer Brewers getting to be in the AL and Astros go back to NL. Brewers go to Central division with Twins,Royals & either expansion team or White Sox. Astros go to central with Rockies,Cards,Braves. Reds and NL Expansion team are in the North.

I didn't read the rest of the thread but yesterday afternoon JP Morosi was on High Heat (thankfully Russo was NOT hosting) and they were talking about this subject. He says it's probably 5-6 years away with Montreal being the most likely team for expansion and number 2? Austin, Texas.

That's a little surprising to me.

Austin Texas? Yeah, that's very surprising.
I wonder if Vancouver could support a team? What about Virginia?

No way Virginia gets one with Washington and Baltimore so close.

I could see Charlotte snagging a team...but, I would presume most folks here in NC love Atlanta (disgarding these weird Yankee fans around here who are delusional ). I live about an hour north of Charlotte (WS) but I would definitely go see a few games a year.

2020s definitely looks like when expansion happens. But I'm still holding out hope that Rays could move if they don't find new stadium.

Virginia will never get a team and I will always hate the Nationals for being the reason for that.

No thanks on splitting up the Cards and Cubs if that happens.

                        My fave: No divisions.

As for post-season, I don't think a team would be hurt by a 3-day layoff...

First round would be 3 games on consecutive days, all at the home field of the "better" team. This would serve to decrease off-time for bye-teams.

6 teams per league in the post-season...
1st round, best of 3, then LDS, then LCS, then WS.

With 4 divisions, this is unlikely, unless they go with 4 div champs and 2 wc...which could be ok.

...though I think it would be hard to argue going with a 4-team playoff with each div champ...the wc chase, however, has been compelling stuff in recent years.

                        Pipe dream(s): Some kind of round-robin style first-round post-season.
                        OR
RELEGATION...I'd love to see relegation in almost every american sport. Create 2 leagues, a Top and Second Tier...watch as Top Tier teams try to avoid relegation, watch Second Tier teams bust it trying to get to the Top.

Say what you will about it, but it would add gravity for teams where it is often lacking.

I'd love to see this in NA as well, specifically for the NHL. It might force a craptacular franchise like the Oilers to finally do something other than stockpile #1 overall picks and help destroy their careers.

Unfortunately, i don't know if it'd work. Quality of players to have 2 leagues, basically 60 teams, is too much, especially attendance. Would fans support a relegated team? Sports culture here is just too different from that

It's an interesting concept, but I just never see it happening.

I'm a fan of the no divisions stuff. I've never cared about how many division titles my teams have had. They seem to be there just for continuity's sake. I would not miss them if they went away.
