Haha, no kidding. I had heated arguments with my pitching coach about why I would refuse to run 5 miles. I'm glad it's catching on at higher levels now and starting to filter through the rest.

I remember being scolded by the college coach because I couldn't run 5 miles when trying out.

I'm not mad at him. I didn't take my conditioning seriously at that age and wish I had. He didn't even let me throw. Told me flat out, "How can I expect you to pitch at this level if you don't have the endurance."

He wasn't wrong. But damn, I wish my pitching defined me over my running.

The sad part of that is how different pitching endurance is from long distance running endurance. This doesn't help now, but he was very wrong.

He's still the coach there! I'll send him an email.

No but seriously, it sucks but I had my chance as a Junior and got the chance to pitch. Faced the heart of the lineup (he had people trying out facing off against the actual team) and handled them. But I was a junior and while he didn't directly tell me the following, I was pretty much the only junior that tried out.

"If you're a junior and I have a freshman with similar or close to similar talent, I'm going to take the freshman so I can develop him over the junior I only have for two years."

Once I heard that, I knew there was no point in trying again. Again, not mad. I played a lot of baseball after college and it's not like I would have been drafted. I wasn't that good.

          He had a point anyway.

Smoltz and Glavine both were used as pinch-runners relatively frequently. Smoltz was the potential tying run on third as a pinch-runner when Otis Nixon tried to lay down a bunt to end the 92 World Series.

I think you're more likely to see a starter who pitched the previous day or is scheduled to pitch the next day. If you need a pinch-runner, the game is close enough you don't want to burn a bullpen arm on the bases when you may need it on the mound later.

I was thinking a reliever that isn't available in that particular game. I don't know though, I guess it really just depends on the manager. Maddon used Travis Wood to pinch run a couple of times last season.

Yeah, if you had a reliever who had worked several days in a row, I could see that too.

My coaches sucked lol. Practices were just running cross country team like distances, then just doing OF drills. I'm a pitcher, they never let people do pitching practice. And when they did, other pitchers had to fill in as role of catcher.... Without catchers equipment.

Tony La Russa used to use Jason Marquis as a pinch runner at times, Marquis was a good athlete.

Giants used Shawn Estes and Tim Lincecum.

I don't even care if it's true or not. I just find the story hilarious.
