Re: MLB Off-Topic
I don't feel a statue is appropriate either, but to compare this to the Hernandez case is absolutely laughable.Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
The difference between intent and consequences matters little to the victims' families. I think we all know the potential consequences flowing from intentionally taking alcohol, drugs and driving at a high speed.
I feel terrible for the victims families if the Marlins go through with this.Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
I don't think hyperbole was the best form here. The guy died and it affected a lot of people. He's a victim too. Ignoring his family and his unfortunate fate is just as terrible.
You could have made the same or better point by suggesting Fernandez put people in danger with his decisions that night (not compared it to murder) or, even better, that he had a smaller impact on Miami Marlins history than guys like Livan Hernandez or Edgar Renteria and Josh Beckett.

Did it ever get confirmed that Yordano Ventura's accident was alcohol-related?Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
This comes from the AP and while it may make the replay process even longer at least there will be some accountability in some respects if it gets done:
While nothing is set, Major League Baseball and umps are expected to discuss a plan -- most prominently used in the NFL -- for crew chiefs to wear a microphone and explain replay rulings.
Under one possible scenario, they would start at the All-Star Game on July 11 in Miami, tweak the process over the season's second half and then go forward with the experiment in the playoffs.
People familiar with the talks spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because an agreement has not yet been reached.
Last year, MLB asked for the plate ump to wear a mic at the All-Star Game, but there wasn't enough time to do it.
The umpires are in the middle of their five-year labour deal and any change would involve negotiations, plus a comfort level on both sides that the system would be efficient, accurate and easy.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: MLB Off-Topic
I think at least one more thing has to be allowed:
If either of the two umpires on the field wearing the headphones see a live replay on the jumbotron that shows indisputable evidence of a call to be overturned, they should be able to make that call themselves and override anything that the officials in NY are looking at.
Nothing must feel worse than an umpire to not only get a call wrong (which is partly why this overruling should be okay, because anyone willing to admit their mistake like that should have such power), but then to see that it's wrong yet the New York crew decidedly does not overturn said call.
---------
Wait wait, one more thing:
No chance for dugout to be able to converse with someone looking at video replay beforehand. Give them ten seconds to decide to overturn it based on what they saw live.
