I had No idea they did this in 1981. How did I miss this piece of history?

It was a strike. Missed most of June, all of July, and the first week or so of August.

Ah, the strike year. I'm going to read up on this now.

Why do they do the split season in A ball? I've never looked into it, but I can't think of a good reason

To keep interest, I believe. It's hard enough to get fans to the park for minor league games...pulling people in when a team has no shot at the playoffs in August is even harder.

I posted this in the game thread, but the Diamondbacks are the first team to achieve a Perfect Game, a 20-K game, and a 4-homer game.

Just read up on that. How horrible was that. Best team from 1st and 2nd half of season made playoffs...

The best and 3rd best teams in baseball that season didn't even make playoffs lol. And a team under .500 made the playoffs.

Yeah it was pretty crazy, IIRC Cincinnati was jobbed out of being in the playoffs despite having the best overall record in the NL West. They finished 1 1/2 games behind the Dodgers in the first half and 1 1/2 games behind the Astros in the second half.

The Reds had the best overall record in BASEBALL with a .611 winning %, but missed out on the playoffs completely. St. Louis had the best record in the NL East, but they had finished 1.5 games out behind Philly in the 1st half and 2 games out behind the Expos in the 2nd half to miss the playoffs. It really was a weird season/year.

So it turns out the Red Sox have been caught stealing signs using Apple Watches to relay the signs quickly to the dugout.

Genuinely shocked, didn't realise anyone used an Apple Watch for anything.

                          Tsk tsk.

Sign-stealing is part of the game (otherwise why would we have signs in the first place, and how can you tell somebody not to steal signs?). You can do it provided two things:

                          1) You're not caught.
                          2) You can do it naturally (no devices).

They failed at both. I love them, but this is a black eye here. At least they admitted it.

Bring down the hammer. Stealing signs how it has been done for 125 years? Go at it. Using electronic devices? That's a no-no. Bring on some draft picks. Sox's 1st Round pick for the next 10 years shall suffice.

If in turn Yankees did indeed steal signs too (electronically) then, I guess depending on similarities and severity, they cancel each other. But what about the Sox stealing signs on other teams? I bet Manfred disappoints again.

I think a few years ban from postseason like college football would be an appropriate punishment.

                                They'll just get fined.

What the Cardinals did was MUCH worse (and a federal offense) and they just had to pay 2mil and give Houston their first two draft picks in the next draft.

This is a non-story. But since it's the Red Sox, let it be blown of proportion. If this was the Reds, or the Athletics, or any of 25 other clubs, nobody would care.
