So I'm watching a game now and I guess I never thought about how much time passes between a pitcher getting a sign and actually throwing the pitch.

Maybe guys need to work faster.

But it should be that simple.

If this is against the rules, then MLB should have a punishment set forth for someone who breaks this rule.

But instead it will play out in the media and beaten to death.

The BoSox broke the rules. Punish them by a fine, loss of draft picks, or whatever and let's play out the final 4 weeks of the season.

The Manfred conference did have some interesting points. Saying there's nothing wrong with stealing signs as teams do it all the time. Issue is simply with electronic device in dugout which is forbidden. He also mentioned that teams in past have had issues with sign stealing and it supposedly just gets resolved by one gm calling the other and basically are like "we're on to you. Stop it.".

Funny thing I also saw, there's a pic online with Farrell and Tim Cook. It's from June. The length of this apparent apple watch stuff was billed as going on for past several weeks...... Coincidence?

Haha. I have no opinion on the pitch clock.

But if you don't want signs stolen, just get the pitch over faster.

It's not a situation that comes up often enough to have a set penalty though (this specific thing never having happened before), nor do they know how long they've been cheating and various other things.

It's going to have to be investigated and then one they have all the facts they'll have to try and find a fair punishment as it's a unique situation, it's not as simple as something like failing a PED test where there is a set punishment. The Red Sox will inevitably appeal whatever punishment they get as well, as there is no real precedent so they know that they will be able to negotiate the punishment down.

It's going to be a long, pretty tedious process

See this what I don't understand.

If you have a rule in place then you should have a punishment/consequence for breaking said rule.

Can't wait to tune into baseball coverage and listen to the "experts" share their 2 cents on this matter for the next several weeks.

The real question is should the punishment be more severe if it was happening for a longer period of time?

If it only happened the game they were caught doing it versus doing it the entire year, will that matter in the eye of the commissioner?

It's because it's a pretty vague concept, using tech to steal signs, so no two cases will be the same, so it's hard to have set punishments. If they've been doing it all season, they will surely be in more trouble than if they've just done it in one series. Also what extent they're using technology will be different from case to case. It does just seem like one of those things that has to be done on a case by case basis.

There should be set parameters though for what the punishment could be, then the judgement should just be how severely on the pre-set scale the punishment should be. (fine between $x and $y, suspensions between x and y games for managers/coaches involved, potential loss of certain draft picks, etc etc) Just have it so everyone knows what form the punishment would take and the maximum/minimum it could be. Without that you're right, there is so much random speculation and lack of clarity

I get what you're saying but again I feel that if you're going to have a rule then you should have a punishment for breaking that rule.

                              But I digress

First "reports" in regards to punishment are saying it will most likely be a fine and possible suspensions.

                                This according to Jeff Passan
