Watching pitchers hit is like watching kickers play running back. I'll never get it.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

I enjoy a handful of pitchers batting. The one that comes to mind is Madison Bumgarner.Boston Red Sox

Re: MLB Off-Topic
I'm sure 2 out of 32 kickers would be enjoyable to watch run the ball as well lol. It's still not worth having to watch the other 30 IMO.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Re: MLB Off-Topic
How much more fun would it be to make one of the position players have to kick as well? That's what they did in the old days...
On the issue of the DH in baseball...why do the AL guys want to see it in the NL? The way it is is great...if you like the DH, you can watch the AL...if you like the pitcher hitting, you can watch the NL. Re: MLB Off-Topic
For me it's less about watching the pitchers hit (although some are certainly capable of handling the bat) and more about what the manager wants to do with that lineup spot. I enjoy the strategy aspect of baseball as much as I do the on-field play. And there just isn't as much of that in the AL (though it's not completely absent).Comment

Actually, I'd argue the kicker is the "DH". When football first came about, you couldn't sub period (offense/defense). 11 guys played both ways...it wasn't until later that the game became specialized and we had guys like kickers.

I personally am pretty indifferent, but because there's no way for both to exist without the other side piping up, it seems better to just kill it with fire and shut them up ASAP. It's like, if this is inevitable, which some people may not see it as so but others do, why drag it out?
I wouldn't fight to get rid of the NL way, but if it's one or the other, I'd fight for the AL way. No taking ace pitchers out in the 6th because of "strategy" that says "Hmm do I want a competent hitter up with the bases loaded or do I want to give a nearly automatic out to keep my pitcher in?", no Chien-Ming Wang having his career ruined rounding 3rd base when he had no business on the bases in the first place. It's like when games go into extra innings and a batter pitches, sure that could be a fun thing to see. If that happened every game, it would no longer be fun. If it happened once every 3 innings, I'd probably stop watching baseball.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Fun fact, the first year (1973), the AL only hit 2 more homers than the NL.
But since the rule started, the AL has hit almost 7500 more homers than the NL. And they've hit more in 28 of the 45 seasons.
(And for the 11 straight years the NL hit more, that was the height of Bonds, McGwire, and Sosa. 98-08)Last edited by TripleCrown9; 01-12-2018, 03:32 PM.Boston Red Sox

Re: MLB Off-Topic
I feel like people have been saying that forever. Maybe if a significant majority felt that the DH made the game more entertaining. That's definitely not the case. We've had 45 years to compare the twoComment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
I honestly have no problem with the way it is, as a matter of fact I love the difference. I'm just saying I think within at least 5 years, it'll get added to the Senior Circuit.

In the years the NL led (the years you mentioned with Bonds/McGwire/Sosa), the NL actually had more teams than the AL (16 to 14) so again, I'd hope they hit more home runs.
The only years you can really compare would be 1973-1976, 1993-1997, and 2013 to the present as those are the only seasons where each league fielded the same number of teams with the DH in place."People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I dunno, Kershaw, Bumgarner, Stroman (when he's in an NL park) and a couple others are fun to watch. I like pitchers hitting because it adds an element of strategy to the game for managers..Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club
