it is possible, but what are the odds someone would say that though without knowing for sure beforehand?

The interesting thing to me is what his agent said this morning…10 teams contacted them when they heard of the opt out and only the Cubs were willing to fire their manager. Even the Twins, who had an opening still, weren't willing to make an offer. Maybe he's not as valued on the market as we all think he is?
      Or has he overvalued himself?

Didn't read what he's asking for but maybe his agent is getting a little overzealous.

When money is involved it's not as unlikely as you seem to think it is.

It happens all the time (players, not necessarily coaches but is no different) and like SF said, I have no doubt he would have had no problem sitting out a year if it came to it.

The interesting thing is that Maddon was already the 5th highest paid manager in baseball with the Rays. His agent said that all of their offers were well below market, so I'm curious what he's trying to get. I know Scioscia is the highest paid manager at $5M/year, so maybe he feels he should be the highest paid? Regardless, I find it odd that a guy who's the 5th highest paid manager would think their offers were below market value...

I think it would be funny if the Rays hire Renteria as their new manager and they go on to win the World Series next year.

Some great points all around. It does seem like Maddon's agent (moreso than Maddon himself) was all "hmm we should take the money and run" but when those 10 teams were lowballing and weren't willing to fire their manager/hire Maddon out of the blue that things went to crap with them.

It's surprising to me that Maddon would be gunning for more money than what he had in TB as he didn't even know about the opt out and when he did opt out he was willing to sit out a year. This feels like it was all predicated on the agent seeing green and over valuing his client. I'm sure the Cubs job is a dream for Maddon but I would think in a perfect world he'd like to have gotten it in a situation that didn't make him look bad from an optics point of view.

I don't know what's worse, paying a family member all that money to keep quiet, or the fact you have to pay a family member that money not to talk. Please Yankees cut this guy and be done with him forever.

The thing is, even here, articles about A-rod get more attention and comments then say, an article about the best defensive player at each position in 2014.

Y'all are tired of him supposedly but he still drives the page hits. For that, he's not going away anytime soon. Im just saying....

Jays to play 2 more games during ST in Montreal! Games will be against the Reds.

It'll be fun to have Nats playing in Montreal one day. You'll hear boos like you've rarely heard before in baseball cause of the hate towards the team that replaced the Expos.

Yankees RP Betances named as 1 of 3 finalists for rookie of the year. He won't win I'm sure but this to me shows how far relievers have come in recognition for major awards which I credit to Mariano Rivera (but others as well) and just how dominate this young man was out of the pen for a Yankee team that struggled to be consistent everywhere else this season
