    re: MLB Off-Topic

I wouldn't mind pitch clocks, but nothing extreme. Just a small change could reduce gametime by alot(which is good thing).

I mentioned it in another thread...Pitchers take just over 18 seconds per pitch on average. What if there was a 15 second pitch clock? 250-300 pitches per game, with the average pitch taking no more than 15 seconds, meaning game time would be reduced by around 15 or so minutes.

20 seconds is short enough and you want 15? That would make it way too easy to steal bases.

I think some of you are only thinking on just the surface of what a pitch clock does, it affects almost everyone but the pitchers and in fact the position players that have spoken up against it the most are the catchers.

The more I think about it, I actually would be okay with a pitch clock but only with no one on base.

I am a baseball junkie…in the off season I watch a ton of old baseball. Recently I watched a 1991 game (Rangers/Blue Jays) and it was amazing the difference in pace of play. The #1 thing that you notice right away is hitters DO NOT step out of the box unless there is a foul ball, there is no adjusting of the gear, etc, and the pitcher literally gets the ball back, looks in the for the sign, and pitches. It's hard to pinpoint where we got away from this, but this is on the umpires…you don't need a 'pitch clock', you need the umpires to regulate the game the way it's supposed to.

I'm as a big a baseball fan as anyone and when I go to games I find myself frustrated with these guys taking their time to adjust the gloves, readjust their helmet, etc. The length of games isn't the problem…it's the pace of play and that has to be addressed.

i don't think pace of play or the length of games is a problem but i'm gonna guess i'm in the minority in that opinion.

The umps let control slip away beginning with Mike "The Human Rain Delay" Hargrove & it just went downhill quickly from there beginning with Nomar Garciaparra.

That sucks. I was planning on going to Wrigley again in April and I love the bleachers.

Mid May looks like the target for it all to be completed. Hopefully no more delays or it'll go into the summer.

I don't see the big deal about the rule. The tempo in the Majors is terrible and needs to be improved. The umps have shown that they don't care about the 12 second rule because it's never enforced, so I think this is a good way to keep things moving along. The game is still timeless.

When the pitch count gets to zero the runner gets an extra step.

Much like in the NFL when the defensive line knows the ball needs to be snapped and they get an extra step.

Big difference in baseball is the runner is unimpeded.

The pitch counter is only there until the pitcher gets on the rubber. After that it stops, so the pitcher can take his time to get his sign and deliver.

So the runner doesn't get any advantage.

Not sure where you are getting that from, here's a video that shows the clock keeps running:

In that video you posted they even state that the clock is only in use until the pitcher comes set. Once he's set the clock is no longer a factor and he can throw the plate or to first (can't step off).

Well that's what I get for keeping my computer on mute all the time.

That makes a lot more sense though then stopping the clock just by stepping on the rubber.

I also don't really get why they can't step off, that's a little odd.

Another thing a clock does is remove some of the angst and tension in late game situations. The beauty of baseball is the slow methodical pace it possesses IMO. A pitcher staring down a batter in the bottom of the 9th, waiting, not knowing when the pitch will be delivered. You can't beat that.

This is also a knee jerk reaction to the lack of an attention span our society possesses now. It's a joke. Stop trying to fix **** that ain't broken.
Absolutely. There's nothing more stressful than late-game situations in the playoffs. Could you imagine some of those crazy situations this past October? "Oh **** bro, I gotta pitch before the clock runs out."

                                UGH. ****ing horrendous.

If you're pressed for time and you can't sit at a baseball game or have an issue with a baseball game going an extra 10 minutes sometimes, perhaps baseball isn't the game for you to watch or attend in person. There's soccer for that.
