"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: MLB Off-Topic
The service time thing has been an issue for at least 3/4 years (the earliest big stink I can remember was with Bryant back in 2015) and the players did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to fight for these rights 2 years ago when they negotiated a new CBA. Safe to say when negotiations start again in 2022 or whenever they happen the same thing will happen again. The MLBPA will once again do nothing to fight for shorter team rights because they (the 32/33+ year old guys) know that their earnings will get shot down the sewer.Comment

That just happened this year, so they might be more aware of what's going on and want something to change.Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
IMO, the issue is that Player A gets affected by this as a 20-21 year old prospect. Acuna is held back to gain an extra year of service time for his team, etc. Then, by the time this comes up again, Player A is now on the other side of the fence and realizes that if he goes to bat for the prospect it will cost him money on this end. He thinks "I paid my dues when I was at that point...said prospect can do the same". Rinse and repeat, the cycle continues.
Honestly, I don't know that it is much different than any other industry...people with more service time are always going to get paid more than someone who is newer, regardless of talent level. I'm sure there are some exceptions, but they are going to be rare."People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring." - Rogers HornsbyComment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
I know journalists love saying things that are controversial to get interest, but Buster olney is genuinely claiming that Josh Hader should be in the NL MVP conversation. Just mental, he's not even been the best reliever on his own team ffsComment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
70 innings of 2 ERA baseball is excellent, you're doing a very useful job for your team, but it's genuinely not remotely MVP worthy, or even Cy Young worthy, no matter how many guys you struck out in the process. Tbh there is pretty much nothing a reliever could do to make me think they were MVP, they just don't contribute enough compared to position players, or even starters.Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
Strikeouts are pretty much a completely meaningless stat. Not giving up runs is the most important thing, regardless of how you get the people out.

Re: MLB Off-Topic
I might be getting slightly grumpy as strikeouts have become a major bugbear of mine. We are apparently in a world where for hitters, strikeouts are seen as irrelevant, no big deal, just an out like any other. But for pitchers, strikeouts are great, worth far more than any other kind of out.
The truth almost certainly lies somewhere in between, but both definitely can't be true!Comment

Olney, Stark, Crasnick, Neyer, Schoenfield all pretty dim bulbs, imo. ESPN has never had much in the way of baseball writing/reporting talent.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
I think it's the fanboy-ness of olney and ESPN in general that annoys me. I get that baseball needs to promote it's stars, but they are so overboard it's cringeworthy. Their bias towards their friends in the game is pretty pathetic as well, they frequently appear to be PR guys more than journalists when certain players and managers are involved.Comment

I wish so much that Ohtani could've stayed healthy. I hope the Angels figure out how to utilize him as a pitcher and hitter more adeptly in the future.

Re: MLB Off-Topic
I would not be surprised if their AA manager John Schneider gets the job or is in the final group before they make the decision. He's familiar with most, if not all of the young guys coming up and is a younger guy who fits in with the SABR type stuff. I would love it if he got the job but either way it's going to be a younger guy who can communicate well with the younger generation.
Vlad wasn't even part of the team either since he got called up to AAA earlier in season and is heading to the AFL.Comment
