RE: Harper as a catcher, per the Internet

Although Harper had previously and predominantly played catcher, the Nationals drafted him as an outfielder to extend his career and to accelerate his player development so that he could debut in MLB earlier.

Yeah he spent the majority of his career in the state of Texas (it was weird seeing him play for the Astros), with stints in Miami, Detroit, New York, and DC.

I wonder how many other bigger name guys were drafted as one position but moved to a completely different one and had more success there.

I remember even Donaldson was a C and even debuted as one, but 3B was where he made a name for himself.

Tom Brady was originally drafted as a catcher, but found later success as a QB.

There are many pitchers who are drafted as shortstops, or the other way around or something. I think Trevor Hoffman was one. Buster Posey was also a shortstop when drafted.

Pablo Sandoval was a catcher growing up too, I think. He was their third-string catcher should anything have gone wrong with the two before. He was also born left-handed.

Then you'll have your players who may have played a completely different sport when drafted, or was at least multifaceted in the sporting world and did very well in their college days for other athletics. A lot of them came from football.

I guess that further goes to show how important developing players is. In other sports you could get away with poor development and guys still shine. In baseball, it's so much more important. And changing positions takes a big risk and lots of trust in the staff that they know what they're doing.

If he's like that in public, what do you think he's like behind closed doors?

Earlier in this thread I mentioned how I discovered Dale Murphy was a catcher for the first couple years of his career.

                      - Dave Stieb was drafted as an outfielder

                      - Jim Thome was a 3B

                      - Gary Carter was an outfielder (a real horrible one from what I read)

You're forgetting a Hall of famer that switched and became one of the best at his position.

Craig Biggio was a catcher that became a HOF 2B.

Edit. Bonus. Not a HOFer but Jorge Posada was a 2B that became a star catcher for the Yankees.

Marcus Stroman also played almost 100 games as a 2B/SS during his college years. He definitely has the speed of a middle infielder.
