      Re: MLB Off-Topic

When you let the lunatics run the asylum...this is what happens. Hinch knew. And he did not put the kabosh on it.

You can't fire and fine all these players. You fire the guys responsible for the behavior of the team and how they conduct themselves. That is how it works.

I think the punishment was fair and the Astros did what they had to do. And if you think this is the reason they won the World Series.....ok. Does it help when you know signs? Of course. Do players steal signs the old fashioned way anyway? Of course they do and it is encouraged. I encourage it as a baseball coach. In fact I expect my players to try and pick up on signs.

But using electronic means is not in the spirit of what "stealing signs" is all about.

When we (my team) steals signs, we use verbal cues and hand signals if a runner is on 2nd base and steals the sign. If we are on the bench and steal a sign we use simple verbal cues. Sometimes we are dead wrong. And I assure you the Astros as well as the Red Sox probably blew more signs then they stole.

It is the manner in which they stole them that is the major issue.

If you have a problem with sign stealing period......then you seriously never played real competitive baseball in your life....or you were not taught or coached well. Because if your signs are weak.....that is on you as a player and manager.

I remember an opposing coach was flipping out on the plate umpire that I was tipping off my batters. Because I was able to steal his pitching signs to his catcher.

The umpire laughed at him and said "and what do you want me to do?" "That is your fault"

Anyway. I do not condone any of the methods the Astros and Red Sox used. Totally unacceptable and not in the spirit of the game and traditional sign stealing.

If all MLB was going to do is take away a few draft picks and only suspend Hinch and Luhnow for a year they should’ve at least stripped the title too, and somehow I don’t think Crane is worried about a 5M fine. Manfred looks pretty weak after this. This cheating scandal was absolutely worth it for Houston, you would trade some draft picks and a year of your manager and GM for a championship every time. At least in MLB.

And Crane even gets to look responsible and like a bit of a good guy here for taking real action against Hinch and Luhnow firing them while the league plays around with little 1 year suspensions. Wouldn’t be too surprised if this isn’t the last we see of both of them.

You fire the GM and Manager who did nothing. Hard to prove what players, and handing down fines and punishment etc.

This goes right to the top. This is internal control. Teams need to hand down their own punishment. And then let the players union grievances begin.

The League will simply say.....control your players. If you can't you lose draft picks, fines and managers and GM's.

I am sure the Astros will do some of their own player discipline if they can. And they should.

I can't get on board with stripping titles in baseball for sign stealing. Sorry.

Just my opinion and we can disagree. But it was not as big a factor as everyone is thinking. Not at all. It just taints it.

Kraft didn't can Belichek after he cheated. I expected this to be the same.

What punishment can MLB do? This feels like the most they can do and stay within the CBA. It feels expected IMO.

How much have you read about what they were doing? From the looks of it, this does not seem to be true for the Astros. They weren't guessing, they had signs figured out by the 3rd pitch of the game in some cases.

4 draft picks for a world series? I think every team would take that trade, but also probably close to what should have been expected.

The penalties for the managers should have been more severe. Need to make it clear to those in power that if they push things/dont have proper institutional control then their career is at risk.

I read the report and they also blew there fair share of them.

Anyway. They cheated. Bottom line. And guys at the top lost their jobs for failure to supervise.

                      As it should be.

A one year suspension without pay for a first offense and then the next time a permanent ban.

                        Not strong enough for you?

Saw some rumors that Alex Cora is getting a lifetime ban; Carlos Beltran was going to get punished, but then MLB realized he is managing the Mets and figured that was punishment enough.

I hope Crane considers Ausmus to replace Hinch. I thought he did an admirable job in the wake of the Skaggs death. LA was a game under .500 and really never recovered after that despite the high point of the combined no-hitter. I realise he probably underachieved in Detroit in 2014 also, but I'm still rooting for the guy.
