    There's also this:

"For a portion of the 1980s at Chicago's Comiskey Park, there was a 25-watt refrigerator bulb in the scoreboard. A member of the organization would sit in the manager's office and watch the TV broadcast, which had a view of the catcher from center field. There was also a toggle switch in the office. Flip the switch and the light in the scoreboard came on, telling the hometown hitter if a fastball or an off-speed pitch was coming."

In 1940 the Tigers did the same thing down the stretch and Hank Greenberg credited with them winning the pennant.

Again, this stuff was found out/known about, but no one lost their minds like this is time. It has to be the social media age prompting the outrage...

First off, wouldn't fly with the union at all. Secondly, MLB knows if you set that precedent, what happens when they suddenly find the whole league is doing this in some shape or fashion? You going to suspend the whole/majority of the league? It's a dangerous precedent and I think they know it...

All I see is "this has happened before so players shouldn't be suspended now". I disagree.

So why should Crane be punished but not players (not disagreeing necessarily that Crane should be punished)?

Oh well, if it wouldn't fly with the Union then I agree they shouldn't suspend any players. I'm sure that won't set any dangerous precedent.

I remember Tim Kurkijian wrote an article nearly 20 years ago about sign stealing...he included a lot of these stories (including the White Sox one above) as the "aw shucks" good old baseball story type of stuff. My point is more that it's like the media are relishing feeding red meat to lions right now...back in the day this wasn't reported like this.

That doesn't compare though man. Sign stealing has always been there. But it doesn't equate to an organization with a camera set up in their own park basically live streaming what pitch was coming and where .

Then if the buzzers are true that adds another dimension. We thought guys were just tipping pitches but now we know why.

This is also why Gary made so many mound visits, apparently it was suspected the Astros were stealing signs. But they didnt know quite how. This is just slimy.

I feel like people aren't reading - the thing I posted above was the White Sox posted someone in CF with a camera/tv to watch signs/and then use the scoreboard to signal to the batter fastball/breaking pitch. That is LITERALLY the same thing the Astros have done here; so how does it not compare?

Before moving to Kauffman Stadium, the Royals' old stadium had a digital clock on the scoreboard and they could control the dots between the hour and minutes.

So the batter could look at the clock, and if one of the dots was missing they knew a fastball was coming (or vice versa).

Stealing signs by itself is fine. As a catcher, you should be varying them all the time as you know teams are doing stuff in the past and have done it recently.

Using devices to signal in is crossing the lines.

Pitchers need to speed up and stop holding the ball so long. The video is delayed and throwing quickly will stop the ability to signal back in time.

Maybe all the pitchers need to get together and strike by throwing at every hitter until MLB does something.

Looks like MLB is refuting that any players wore buzzers...not sure if they’d admit it if they did, but there’s that. Lots of disinformation floating around though for sure...

It'll be interesting to see what Manfred says and does the next few days. There HAS to be rule changes somehow with video feeds around the park.

I’m with you. These other examples are other examples — and they all suck.

I don’t like the “well it’s happened before ¯\_(ツ)_/¯” attitude.

People probably were outraged, and now they have an outlet to express it. Not to mention dig up video of trash cans being banged, guys running away to change their jersey, etc.

I’d take Rose betting on baseball over all this sign signaling ****. It’s downright cheating and I’m not cool with it.

The issue is they can't really stop it.

They can delay all video broadcasts 30 seconds, but that would only work for tv broadcast and it would affect gambling too much.
Direct video in stadium probably wouldn't be affected.
You could jam all communication frequencies, but fans wouldn't put up with that.
Any hardwired equipment would still work so you could still steal the sign and put it in the jumbotron.
You can use earpieces, but that may be a safety issue.
Then you have the issue with the catcher needing to talk or having someone else calling the pitches.

The best MLB can do is say any sign stealing being done outside of the dugout gets you suspended for life.

Teams can hire people and tools to find patterns based on the pitches called, thrown and scan the stadium for signals. Not easy to do, but MLB doesn't appear to want to stop it.
