There are definitely less sinister ways to look at the Altuve HR off Chapman: Chapman hung a slider after missing wildly with his fastball....and a great hitter like Altuve knows how to hit a meatball when he sees one.

Sure, historical context is important; the Astros aren't the first team to use technology to steal and relay signs, but I don't really like the slide into nihilism here ("the Astros cheated, but so did past teams. So what!), which is the impression I'm getting from you.

Stealing signs is not new. The technology is. If the technology that exists now existed in the past, the model the Astros used would have been used then.

The Astros deserved to be punished and so does every other team that did it. To think this is conceptually new and that MY team would NEVER do that is extremely naive.

the funny thing is Houston didnt stop because they were told to or developed a conscience or were afraid of being caught and reprimanded... they stopped because they didnt feel it was a help. in other words they would have continued on into the recent Nationals WS. if they had only done it for 1 game, they could have been ‘‘champions’’ again. and I bet this championship WOULD have been vacated.

Well, if it was helping I'm sure they would have done it. Essentially that's only evidence that it didn't really help.

                Re: MLB Off-Topic

Reading the summary some points jump out:

                1) Manfred goes out of his way to clear Astros' owner Jim Crane of any wrongdoing repeatedly in the report. If Crane did nothing wrong it should be said and stated for the record but it comes in many ways as boot-licking:

At the outset, I also can say our investigation revealed absolutely no evidence that Jim Crane, the owner of the Astros, was aware of any of the conduct described in this report. Crane is extraordinarily troubled and upset by the conduct of members of his organization, fully supported my investigation, and provided unfettered access to any and all information requested.
                Calm yourself Manfred.

                2) It is my impression that Cora's punishment, even if he never coached the Red Sox, would have been higher than that of AJ Hinch just by his conduct while he was with the Astros.

                Manfred says of Hinch:

Hinch neither devised the banging scheme nor participated in it.
                But of Cora:

Cora was involved in developing both the banging scheme and utilizing the replay review room to decode and transmit signs. Cora participated in both schemes, and through his active participation, implicitly condoned the players’ conduct.

That's just bad. I think that would warrant 2 years by itself.

But then there is this potentially explosive synergy by being precisely the Red Sox, the team whose previously had been caught "transmitting sign information from their replay review room to individuals in the dugout wearing smart watches" (along with the improper use of the replay review room phone by the Yankees) that initially prompted Manfred to issue the now critical September 15, 2017 press release who ended up hiring Cora.

Which begs a lot of questions:

                • Did in fact the Red Sox engage in a sign stealing scheme via electronic means after the September 15, 2017 press release?
                • Did anyone on the Red Sox knew about Cora's conduct with the Astros before they hired him? Who? The owner? Dombrowski?
                • Did Cora implemented his scheme right away when he got the Red Sox?
                • Was it the same scheme? A different scheme? A more sophisticated one?
                • Which players participated in the scheme? For how long?
                • If the Astros stopped the scheme because they thought it was ineffective why would Cora continue it with the Red Sox?
                • Was scheme ever effective at all?
                • Did the scheme stopped being effective because it lacked Cora's participation after he left for the Astros? Because Beltran retired (he retired after the 2017 season)? A combination?

As I see it Cora is out 2 years just for his conduct with the Astros. But going to a 2nd franchise to implement his scheme (if that was the case, that hasn't been established yet) and compromised another team? That's at least another year.

This is so interesting. Can't wait to read the next summary.

That is not what I’m trying to say; I’m reading trash like this all over the place:

Baseball is burning? Get out of here...this is not the end of the baseball world. Good heavens it is NOT as bad as Pete Rose betting on baseball (we’ve that in this thread and elsewhere). I’m not saying this is okay, I’m saying people need to calm down, realize this has happened before/will happen again at some point, and stop acting like baseball is burning.

I think you just see this in a different light then alot of people. Because to me this is much worse then the steroid scandal.

You showed examples of this being done in the past to a degree. But that's not the issue.

If Houston was doing this and other teams that played them weren't. Then they had a distinct advantage and are fake champions. Now if it comes out that everybody was doing this then I'll get off my high horse.

But I really don't think that was the case.

Has it been confirmed, I haven't seen it if it has, that the Astros were only doing this at home, or did they have a system set up for road games as well?

I've only heard that it was at home. I'm sure it would be much more difficult to do on the road without getting caught.

I'm almost certain it accounted for Braun's wild Home/Road splits through most of last season.

Agreed, though I think it really is just this:

His heart is in the right place (albeit is also very narrow-minded and prejudiced) and in hindsight it may actually show that he had merit in what he said, but it shouldn't be said out loud and he'd have to think the San Francisco Giants organization is better than to do this if it wasn't to their benefit. I for one am hoping the Giants are doing it for every right reason and for no reason that can equate at all to gender.

That being said, I do question what she will offer from a softball experience background. I don't know what Alyssa's exact role will be, but one thing for sure is that spirit, hustle, and sense of urgency were likely at the top of her game. I'm a softball coach myself, and coming from only being a baseball player, what I liked to do is show my players what kinds of things that I can actually take from baseball into softball (and the things that I can't I leave out), so it's possible that she will be doing the same thing here. I'm curious to know of her baseball background (not just fundamentals, but also the 162-game grind, focus and prep, etc.) so that a Huffalike would not ever stop and wonder: "I'm a seven-year vet, so why should I take stock into what she has to say?"

Nevertheless, San Francisco is the perfect place for this kind of hire, by the way. We do everything different here where everybody is accepted, graced, and welcomed. Aubrey may not understand that about here, since he was only with us for so little time.
