    Gwynn isn't alive, unfortunately.

And yes absolutely "seriously Pujols?!" Yes. Yes. An unequivocal yes.

It's hard to dwindle it to 8, but it's asinine to act like Pedro Martinez isn't worthy of being in that discussion, and this is coming from someone who hated Pedro Martinez with an unbelievable passion.

Of the 8 Listed on the site I would go Aaron, Pedro, Seaver, and write in Ryan.

8 Listed are Aaron, Bench, Bonds (disgrace, IMO), Henderson, Koufax, Pedro, Mays, Seaver.

Pujols is definitely up there, and if we are talking greatest and not best, then Jeter is certainly in the conversation.

What's the difference between greatest and best?

He's absolutely peer to everyone in that group. As others have mentioned, Gwynn is no longer with us. As much as I loved Nolan Ryan, he isn't in this group IMO...I'd put Pedro and Rickey Henderson in there before I'd put Ryan.

Well, at least to me, I see best as simply the person who was the best player period. Greatest is more of a construction, which can include how that person affected the sport and the culture as a whole (if they did), sometimes aided by circumstances . For example, Jackie Robinson was a very good first baseman, yet a lot of his greatness is derived from the all the vile and hate he had to endured in becoming the first African-American player in baseball while handling it with courage and dignity.

Muhammad Ali isn't necessarily considered the best boxer of all time yet acknowledged by many as the "greatest". A lot of that had to do with his refusal to fight in Vietnam, being stripped of the title, fighting Frazier in perhaps the most hype sport event of all time (and losing) then winning the next two, miraculously beating George Foreman to regain the title and so on and so forth.

Is Derek Jetah the best Shortstop of all time? No. He wasn't even the best of his generation, that was Alex Rodriguez (lets not get into the PED thing here). Is he the greatest Shortstop of all-time? Maybe. From the his high school promise to become the shortstop for the New York Yankees, to bringing the most storied franchise in the history of American sports (maybe the world) back to prominence, being part of what many consider the best and greatest team in resent memory (1998) to his Captaincy, to all his memorable postseason heroics and all the fanning and adulation (nearly bordering on ridiculous at the very end). I could see the case of Jetah being the greatest (aside from the fact that he wasn't too shabby either).

In other cases I could see the best also being the greatest like with Michael Jordan.

At least that's how I see it.

                Hypothetical question for my book.

For a young star player, which team would be the worst to get drafted by? I'm leaning towards Arizona or Houston, but I'm open to suggestions.

During Pedro's prime, he was more valuable on a game by game basis than any pitcher since Koufax.

Definitely not Houston. They have a ton of young talent and aren't saddled with horrible contracts.

I'd say either the Rangers or Phillies. Both teams are pretty bad right now and are strapped to old guys with terrible contracts.

If the Rays weren't 100% moving in the next 3-5 years, they'd be a contender too.

I might go with Tampa Bay still. I mean, my book is like 90% fictional so them moving won't affect the story.

Basically, if you were the next big thing, where is the last place you'd want to end up.

Well, Houston is in Texas which has no income tax so that's automatically great. Lots of young talent plus some good stuff coming up soon enough. Arizona has a star in Goldschmidt plus Pollock who's starting to become pretty damn good himself and if Tomas pans out that's a decent offense.

Tampa Bay being a franchise in limbo might be a bad situation to go to.

                        Philadelphia is a disaster zone.

Any player should feel lucky as **** to be drafted by anyone, so whatever.

I'll add the Mariners too since they cannot develop prospects at all. It's been bust after bust for the last decade. Cano is a great player, but way overpaid and can't do it alone. Cruz will be gone/done by the time you get called up and Felix can't score runs for himself.

Yanks are in this list as well. Over the last 10 years our only notable players who are contributing are Gardner, Betances, and Cano.

Part of the reason is also the Yankees like to trade their prospects.

Well I decided to start a RTTS with the protagonist, and I got drafted 4th overall by the Twins. So that seems like a good direction to go in.
